What did you do in your garden today?

My brain immediately gave me the image of a tomato plant growing out of a chicken's butt.

What did you do in your garden today?

If you grow a short season hybrid and plant the seeds, chances are good that you'll get something close to the parent. The vast majority of modern tomatoes don't out-cross (the result of a major genetic bottleneck) so most are self pollinated. Grow seeds from fruits you like (particularly the...

What did you do in your garden today?

My plan is to eventually be able to plant everything in fall and let it come up on its own time in the spring. What can be self-seeding or perennialized will be.

What did you do in your garden today?

Planted out a bunch of herbs. Watermelons are up. They do a pretty good job of hibernating until it's warm enough for them. One pumpkin survived the cold tolerance test and I marked it for seed. It has two sets of true leaves already. Moschatas are coming up. No corn yet, but since it was only...

What did you do in your garden today?

Sure it will. Lots of holes dug, sticks broken up, he might even be able to fit a nap in there.

Things you can't say without an explanation

And again, if you told people you were eating Jeffrey Dahmer an explanation would be necessary.

I considered that, and if prices go down I still may in the future.

What did you do in your garden today?

It rained, and rained. I took one step into the main garden and started sinking. Nope. New greenhouse is up but not finished. Winecaps are coming up. Chickees pipping. Replanted moschatas and pumpkins just before the rain started. Chickens winter food storage. I need to replant beans and corn...

    Nascent chicken food forest

They have 3 acres to roam, although they usually stay right up around the coop and the house, where they have trees and a deck for shelter. Right now it's 3 acres of grass, so I need to build a shelter belt that will allow them to roam the whole area safely. This chicken food forest is the start.

    Cattle panel greenhouse

My passive solar greenhouse at my old house consistently maintained a temperature between 12 and 15 degrees F above the outside after the outside temps hit freezing. Interestingly, the variance widened when the temperatures got lower. So when it was 20 degrees outside, it was 32 inside. 15...

    Cattle panel greenhouse

My thought on that was old carpet or vinyl, if I can find someone remodeling.

    Cattle panel greenhouse

I have some heavy plastic, but decided against using it for this greenhouse because of the way the wind is here. 40-50 mph gusts aren't unusual, and this will be in the direct path of most of the wind.

    Cattle panel greenhouse

Maybe this group would have some opinions about my second greenhouse. This greenhouse is going to be more of a sprout house--no ground contact, it's built on top of an existing deck. The house is to the East and there's a big tree to the West, so during the winter it will get full sun about...

What did you do in your garden today?

    Started the cattle panel greenhouse.

    Nascent chicken food forest

Yeah. This is their food forest area, so I need to decide on the major plantings.

    Nascent chicken food forest

Ok, this doesn't exactly count as gardening in the traditional sense. This is a picture of my planned chicken forest. This is just bare bones, providing shelter and a few winter snacks. Other things will be added later. The two curved lines are rows of logs, on contour. The house is to the...
