Well, another interview done. My bad on this one, I thought it was a remote job, but reviewing the description this morning saw that it wasn't and I would have to sell my 25 acres and move to a large, very liberal city. Not happening. Too bad, I think they were sincerely interested in hiring...
So yesterday morning, I got up early and took the dog outside. I decided to feed the barn cats right away and I took dog to do chores. Got about 3 steps out of the fenced yard and look over and see a doe and 2 fawns in the fenced orchard area. Can you really call it fenced if the gates don't...
Still looking for job, time to stop looking for that "career" job and find something to pay the bills. It would have been nice to find something in the field I have spent most of my working life but obviously that is not going to happen. I have had interviews almost every week but no luck. My...
Ya, looking at the freeze dried stuff, it is on sale right now AND in stock. Figures. We are getting a little tight in the budget with me not being able to find a job.
Time to stop being picky and get a job just for the paycheck. I was hoping to be able to find a "career" job for the last...
I opened a #10 can of tomato powder that we bought 15 years ago. It is actually pretty good stuff. I made some tomato paste out of it and it tastes like store bought tomato paste, lol. I was out of the little cans of tomato sauce that I use for my pasta and tomato sauce lunch dish. DH won't...
When I dehydrated blueberries, I guess I over did it and they turned out very dry and went to dust as I tried to move them to a jar for storage. Not wasting blue berries by dehydrating them ever again. Now I can pie filling, jam or freeze.
If you want some good dutch oven and/or camping recipes do a search for CEE DUB recipes. The webpage CEEBUBS.COM is basically just for buying his cookbooks, but there a great number of his recipes available online elsewhere.
Our well water is extremely hard. We have an iron filter, but the water softener died, and we haven't replaced it yet. I buy filtered water from the store to use for canning purposes. It is reverse osmosis filtered and I get it for $0.39 per gallon. It is also convenient to have 4 gallons of...

Is it acceptable to make a cherry pie from pie filling that I canned myself?
Store bought is horrible, which is why I prefer to make my own. It doesn't hurt that I live near Door County WI which has many cherry orchards.
wow, it's been over a year since I posted to this thread.
I got laid off from my last job - April 26, 2021 to April 29, 2022. Lack of work. They were trying to expand and it didn't happen. Back to job search again - this time no COVID payments and work search proof is required for...
I just canned 3 pints of beef with onions, 3 pints of chicken chunks and 1 pint of beef broth.
I have been reading up on the Presto Electric Pressure Canner. I am really tempted to get it - mostly for the ease of set and forget. It seems once you have the thing loaded, all you have to do it...
Good luck with the grain mill. What kind did you get?
I think it iwll really help with what you are trying to make. I love making homemade bread with the flour I mill.
@R2elk I am glad to hear that you have been able to keep your sourdough alive and well.
My sourdough starter was 4 years old when I moved out to Wyoming. 2 months later is was pink with grey fuzzies. My second starter lasted almost a year before going pink. I may have been the problems...
I think one of your biggest problems is not having a grinder to properly grind the grains. I think the corn meal has to be much finer than that to make a tortilla.
I prefer to get a start from someone, whether I buy one or a generous soul offer to share.
I have tried to "catch" wild yeast for a starter. 3 out of 4 times, it ended with the wrong things growing in there. The 3 bad times were all in Wyoming - high mountain desert is a rough climate.
I like...
