I have never been able to raise all of my own meat or dairy. I simply don't have the acreage to do so. However, through the years we have bought beef, and pork from local folks. I have raised numerous broilers and rabbits. We have hunted some years. I have always kept chickens for eggs. I...
Fixed and filled my last raised bed for this season, and planted watermelon. Then, cleared the kale bed and planted my rhubarb starts and mulched it.
Super hot out today!
I finished planting the winter squash, and finished hilling up the potatoes. Planted a double row of bush beans. I fertilized the first row of bush beans as well. Everything seems better than the corn patch which is good.
I need to plant sweet potatoes (I haven't picked up my second bundle of...
Continued work in the garden today. Today, for some reason, it was much easier. It may have just been that upper corner in the corn patch. I had plenty of fluffy soil to hill my potatoes with. Tomatoes tilled up well too. I got all of my squash hills fixed and mulched. Tomatoes, peppers, okra...
I only mulch when necessary. I mulch cucumbers, squash, and potatoes usually. The garden needs about 8 inches of rotted manure applied to it in the fall then tilled in during the Spring. However, getting that done with everything else I have to do is hard.
I am just hoping the rain will soften...
We worked in the garden yesterday. I mulched, fertilized and replanted a few cucumbers. Re-planted spots in the beans, and corn as well.
However, my beautiful fluffy soil is basically concrete right now. It is baked hard. My plants have germinated and grown fairly well, but this might hurt...
Refurbished an old bed, and added new soil to it. I covered it in plastic and then planted my Hoodoo melons in it. The main garden is still too wet to do anything with it. However, it looks well considering all of the rain.
I learned a hard lesson today. I called the processor about our order for beef and pork. We aren't getting it.
Moral of the story: Raise your own and know how to process your own.
I'll not be caught in this shape again.
Just checked the garden out. It is so wet. My transplants look okay. None of those were washed out. My beans and corn might be washed in places. It was bone dry, and then we got 4 inches of rain. We are expecting more today. Gardening has gotten so challenging here in the last few seasons.
