This morning I just came across reference to this site. And for pallet-wood project enthusiasts, it's worth knowing about if you don't already know it:

On our homesite, my shop situation is far from ideal. My table saw (one of my tools that gets the most frequent use) is in our large shed that also has my big lumber rack, and at the other end has our firewood supply for winter — in between these two ends, this shed is where we store garden...
What happens when you try to watch it? (Or rather what doesn't happen?)
I'm sure there's a good & natural reason for that. Sometimes a more open-air situation is best... I'd assume most often you're finding there's an advantage to work in your carport.
In my opinion, every homestead needs what I call a “mixed shop.” A shop, or "tool shed" or plain “shed” (Aussie term), being a work space. It’s where you can do repairs, maintenance, or modifications on devices and equipment — not to mention, making things from scratch from various materials...
I believe the scientific estimate of coverage here was 85%. It was interesting to watch. I have an arc-welding mask. We also made a pin-hole viewing device. Both worked well. Didn't record any image, though.
One thing that was interesting was the sharp shadows of objects around our place...
We've been harvesting some things from the gardens. Here are preparations for some of the tomato sauce that's in the works these days. Roasted garlic and fine-chopped, sauteed onions are part of the recipe. The sauce gets canned and stored in our basement cold room.
"Like south of Houston!" Yeah, you are in a different locale. :plbb
Well, I've grown Yukons many times and mostly had pleasing results. When I look back, I may have had fusarium in spuds and had it too lightly (maybe less than the mere 5% of my Yukons that have it this year), and hence just...
I just harvested the first of six potato varieties we're growing this year, Yukon Golds (which matured earliest). Last year, we lost about 35% of that variety to fusarium, which is a sort of rot in the tubers and a wilting of the above-ground portion of the plant. A section of the tuber, when...
We have enough snow, and places to ski, in winter around here that we've never gone to Blackcomb/Whistler in winter. Besides, the winter highways can be formidable. But we drove there last fall and enjoyed it. It was kind of off-season, but there were a lot of high-tech mountain bikers using...
That's an appealing arrangement of garden yield. :clap Nice variety, beautifully arranged. Milkmansdaughter, looks like you arranged them on a black background (or is that some sort of photoshopping?)... in any case, very effective.
Congratulations.
This a a great thread, crealbilly. Very nice to see this work.
I play guitar, and have fooled around with bass but never owned one. I'm amazed you can build 8-string basses with such a graceful, narrow neck. Must be some very reliable reinforcing rod in there!
I've got a good friend who's a...
Oh man, do I agree about the 'plastic junk'! :tongue Useless.
As I said above, I'm guessing that some company has come out with snap-in-place connectors specifically for sprinkler heads on galvanized pipestands. If they have, then the set-up would not involve as many small parts as I figured...
I'm with you there. We have probably a year's worth of food around our house, have gravity-feed water (plus some large water storage containers), LED emergency lights, first-aid supplies, etc, etc. I see these things as the natural outgrowth of living on land.
Our daughter is adult now, lives...
I don't have any analytics about membership or postings. There were a lot of folks posting here prior to Dec 2012. (yes, that’s quite a while ago now) I joined somewhat before that time. There was a feeling at that time that maybe some big event, a possible cataclysm, was coming up. Many...
A slice of real life... Child Wisdom
Reported by Jennifer (the granny) to friends in the neighborhood, via email. Martina is her daughter-in-law, and Esta is her 5-year-old granddaughter who has an infant brother (Louis):
Martina: Esta, watch your brother while I go to the outhouse.
(Thirty...
Yeah, it's beautiful around here. Of course, we all probably appreciate landscapes that are different from home... I've visually enjoyed vast flatlands planted to wheat as far as the eye can see (like in eastern Alberta and in Saskatchewan), or flattish cactus desert like I've explored some in...
