    NH Homesteader's journal

That sounds a lot like Red the Butcher's recipe from Backyardherds.com. Someone on here or BYH posted how they make bacon in the refrigerator by marinating the meat with sugars and smoke flavoring. It was said to be quite tasty. I don't have a smoker so I might try something like that one day.

What are your kids doing today?

I think every kiddo ought to know how things work. My grands that can understand know why the roosters chase the hens. It's because they're 'In Love'!

    Getting acclimated to country

I would love a pond like that. Of course we have three farm ponds but this would be nice for the chickens and it's so pretty.

What are your kids doing today?

I took a nap this morning when I laid down with Grandson. Speaking of girls. My sons all decided to start bathing and wearing clean clothes about the same time they got interested in girls. Funny how that works out! DS12 has gotten awfully spoiled since he broke his leg. He has taken over the...

TIAR Ranch (Toes in a Row)

:welcome Howdy from Arkansas. So where do you live that living off-grid is illegal? I don't really want to live off grid but I would like to get a little more self-reliant. This is a great place to learn skills and share information. X2 on posting some pictures. It sounds like you are doing well...

    rodeogirl's journey to being self-sufficient

I don't know if you have a pressure canner but canned fish is suppose to be similar to canned tuna fish. I had friends that would catch carp every year and can it for making fish cakes all winter.

Helpful videos on simple maintenance and repair

:weee:weee:weee Yeah! I am so happy to see these videos. DH is forever taking our lawn mowers to the fix-it man in town. What a hassle and not to mention the cost. We easily spend $200/year. DH keeps talking about getting a boat but I told him if he can't keep the motor running then it ain't...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

The Wildbunch loves their pickles. Especially bread and butter. One of my sons will only eat dill. I'm hope to put up some more this summer. We go through them fast.

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

I just canned 7 quarts of red kidney beans and 6 quarts and a pint of pintos. I also did another batch of strawberry preserves. They didn't set up very good. I used liquid pectin for the first time. The Wildbunch will eat it anyway. I'm sure after setting in the refrigerator it will set better...

    Organizing and decluttering the homestead

I like to have a nice clean house to come home to. The Wildbunch think it's stupid that I make them get their rooms straighten before we leave. A clean home just gives you such peace. It's harder to do it with a house full of boys but I am determined. I don't think it's OCD to want a clean home...
