    Tap those trees!

We've looked into getting pans. group of 4 4" ones were $100. And we'd use them on any evaporator we'd make, so figured the investment should hopefully last awhile.

    Tap those trees!

Tell me about the evaporator. We don't want to do anything permanent this year, so we're going for inexpensive.

    Tap those trees!

Looking at the long range forecast and it looks amazing! Think I'll try to tap the maple trees tomorrow! Anyone else making syrup this year? I love having a sugar source from my property. I only have between 5-10 trees but if the weather cooperates we can get quite a bit of syrup produced...

Egg and meat production in poultry

My birds are also laying again this week and this will be their first spring. Getting 8/13. And I was sick last week and no one ate any eggs, so I've got around 4 dozen right now!

K, just have to laugh at the brownie talk. I was eating a brownie yesterday too! Right after all of the healthy eating talk and I thought about popping back on just to point that out. I had made a one serving brownie in the microwave and topped it with some ice cream. I should probably go...

January Jump-Start (Garden Dream and Plan Thread)

Oh I have a new plan for around the garden: now that it appears I have an endless supply of woodchips I'm going to be making that area mow-less. Will also be using those chips as a mulch first and then moving it to the paths between the beds. And will be leaving the woodchip mulch around the...

That's great that you're good at following your new diet NH. Are you still being fairly restrictive what what you're eating or are you able to ease up a bit now? My diet is kinda poor these days; I'm in good health but know I would feel so much better if I cut out the junk. Ugh, and exercise. I...

    Dealing with discouragement

I think it's incredibly more complicated then just mettle and toughness: societal structure and norms, family background, opportunities, constraints, knowledge, etc etc etc, are all influences on how "easy" a self-sufficient type lifestyle may be. Don't forget, people have been living in cities...

Got it free - whatever it is??

Wood chips! I just got a big pile dumped on my farm this morning! :weee(now it's getting snowed on but so be it!) Thanks to my friend who saw them doing tree work across the road from her. Plus she's hooked me up for potential future deliveries. Bless her!

Sooooo far:( But that's also what makes planning now fun :) Though I know you're planning a smaller garden this year. Because of the market-garden potential I wanted to get an idea of how spring would play out. If it goes ahead everything will have to be thoroughly planned out by the end of...

    Dealing with discouragement

Ha, oh @Chic Rustler , being overwhelmed is my MO. My brain likes to keep me in a state of feeling overwhelmed to the point that it can be very difficult to get started, let alone do part of a project! So maybe this type of life isn't for me, but I just keep going anyway! So I too reiterate...

I just did some of my seed starting dates as well, though they're subject to change.March 14 is my earliest date so far. My dad will start onions mid-late February. So long to wait for anything to get started...

I remember when I worked on a farm one spring we did the same thing with direct-seeding tiny seeds using a seeder in the garden. It couldn't seed carrot seeds very well so we'd add a certain amount of soil and it really helped!

It's true @sumi, but if I'm planning to sell then planning is really important! You can make changes as necessary, and adapt to that years conditions, but market gardens need to be well organized. My other garden isn't nearly so well planned out as it's just for personal use.

For sure! There a lots of people doing that around here. But it's not a huge concern; I'd like to see if there's anything salvageable in there! Maybe I can add that to the ever-growing summer job list lol

Lol ya, we tried that January tap, it was too temping not to and was our first year so we wanted to see what we could do. It was fine, but had boiling issues which we will resolve this year.
