    WW2 Rationing Recipes - American

Here's what the Canadians used for a butter extender: Like I have any cream hanging around. That would have been in my coffee in a New York minute. Others just whipped equal amounts of softened butter and lukewarm water. You wouldn't be able to cook with that, but it helped them at the...

    What's for dinner?

Leftovers tonight. Today I made a new sparerib recipe, pain in the butt, but the tidbit I tried was really good. Kids are coming over tomorrow, so I can pop the ribs in the slow cooker to warm up. I'll make a double batch of that chicken thigh recipe, got peanut butter balls made (and approved...

    Natural Easter Egg Dyes

Nice!! Years ago, a neighbor would hard boil colored eggs from various breeds of chickens and give them to my kids. lol They weren't dyed at all, and my kids loved that the Easter bunny left them over at her house every year.

    What's for dinner?

Left over chicken fried rice that I took out of the freezer, Asian veggie burgers. After our son leaves for Montana, I'm going to start checking into making more freezer meals.

    What's for dinner?

Absolutely! I used a big 17" cast iron skillet instead of a baking pan. No lid. I think it helped with the browning on the bottom and there's no problem using it under the broiler. Honestly, when I was making it, I was thinking that it was going to be a flop. After I put the skillet under the...

    What's for dinner?

Well, that didn't happen, so we had Buddha Bowls again - lettuce, onion, bean and burger stuff, yogurt (instead of sour cream), pumpkin seeds, orange bell pepper, and charred corn. (Just fry it in a bit of butter/oil until it starts getting a bit charred.) Oh, and topped with grated cheese. A...

    What's for dinner?

I have nothing on Sorrel. Interesting, though. For supper tonight, we're having modified Potatoes Ole'. I'm just trying to use up leftover burger/bean/taco seasoning that's in the frig, plus some Crispy Crowns that have been lurking in the freezer. If they're past the point of tasting decent, I...

    Got Raccoons?

I'm with you. They'll leave on their own accord, then you can close up the opening. Mama also isn't going to be interested in keeping her brood there with your dog.

    The Bread Thread!

Have you tried adding some vital wheat gluten? My all whole wheat loaves were pretty dense, the wheat gluten helped lighten the loaf.

Uh, almost vegetarian here. No sane eco friendly person is trying to take away your cows. The 'beef' is with the big industries who ignore sustainable land practices.

    What's for dinner?

That's what I used. We have a 17" cast iron skillet and it held all the thighs I baked. I'm to the point where I need a crane or a winch to lift that skillet when it's got food in it.

    WW2 Rationing Recipes - American

I don't know about USA egg rationing, but in Britain, all eggs, milk, etc went to the military. If you had milk that soured before it was collected, you could make cottage cheese from it, otherwise, the military needed it. But it was rare that they let you keep the critter. The grain that fed...

    The Bread Thread!

From what I remember, it's whey from cheese making. We didn't do much with sourdough. Maybe someone else will chime in?

    laminate floor

Looks great! We put in all hard surface floors. We do have some carpet runners and a 9x12 in the living room. I miss the feel of carpet. But I don't miss the dirt that I knew was still there after I vacuumed.

The Oslo Meal (Britain) "The Oslo Meal was originally given as an EXPERIMENT to school children during WWII. This very nutritious but basic quick meal vastly improved the development and the health of the nations children. Many families began using it as a main meal on occasions because of...

No, there's not. Hunting rabbit, squirrels, whatever you could get would add a great deal to the meal. AND a hefty garden.
