    Canning Cajeta

No, I never did can mine (actually my 9 year old made it). I didn't like the recipe. It tasted too much like sweetened condensed milk to me. Bleh. Okay, actually I think I ate the whole jar but....I think I could find a better recipe somewhere. I'd like to have any recipes anyone has tried...

    Is lye easy to find?

Hey, thanks for all the suggestions. I'll check the drug store and hardware store but I think I'll also go check out Lowe's since we have one close by. The suggestions are great. :) Wow, Carolyn, sounds like you've got quite the soap business goin' on. :bow It sounds fun. I can't wait to...

    Is lye easy to find?

My son wants to make soap with his goat's milk. I'm willing to help him but not sure of where to get the lye. Does lye have to be ordered online or is it easily found in stores? I'd prefer going to a store, of course. Where have you found it in your neighborhood? Grocery store? Drug...

    Homemade Carmel Candy

My husband tell me his mom used to make this for him as a kid. It's one of his favorite memories. :)

    Canning Cajeta

Being from So. Cal, I love cajeta - goat's milk caramel dip. Best caramel dip for apples ever! It's awesome on vanilla ice cream, too. I never thought about making it myself until recently when my 9 year old bought some dairy goats. Now, I feel rich because we get to reap the benefits of his...

To Duck or Not to Duck

Save your marriage, not the duck. Your husband will love you more and the student will learn a valuable lesson by dealing with the situation himself. ;) I've been in your shoes many a time and have not always made the right decision. So what did you decide?

    Are You Into UFO Prophecy?

What a great thread. I don't believe in green aliens and all that goes with that jazz. It's clear a lot of people do and don't. A lot of people believe in the Chupacabra, too. Have seen it with their eyes - even if other people that saw the very same creature and said it was actually a...

What's the lowest price you have found for Gamma Seal lids? I see Emergency Essential catalog has them for $7.50. Has anyone found a better price elsewhere?

    Canning eggs

A handyman was doing work for us recently. He saw we had birds so he struck up a conversation about their eggs. He said that you could can or jar chicken eggs and they'd stay good "forever". I'm guessing he meant at least a year. He said it's an Asian thing. lol. They're not pickled...

Where/how do you incubate your yogurt?

I've read recipes online but they are vague about where and how to leave your yogurt for the 6 - 12 hours it needs to develop. My digital gas oven won't let me set it for lower than 175 degrees F - way too high for yogurt. Any ideas or tips? Where and how are you incubating your yogurt?

    Worms in Rabbits????

Yes, both are available over the counter at feed stores. The piperzine is administered in the water, the ivermectin comes in several forms. I really like the apple flavored gel made for horses. Just give a small pea-sized dollop shmeared on your rabbits upper lip (he'll lick it off) for 3...

    Worms in Rabbits????

Hi. I'm guessing from what you wrote that the white worms where fly larvea. It's certainly the season for it whith the weather warming up and you being in So. Cal. Don't worry about them being in your bin. Just feed your rabbit the DE once a day. You may still see flies around but their...

What's your areas most likely disaster and how are you prepared?

Earthquake, power outage, drought, bad economy, riots  , and terrorist attack. Yes, I live in California. We keep food storage - both "raw" items like wheat, oats, dry milk, dry beans, and food we use every day - canned/jarred foods from the grocery store. We also keep toilet paper...

What written material do you regard as necessary...

I guess that depends on the emergency. Definitely the scriptures. Then perhaps our Surviorman book and Edible Wild Plants - a North American Field Guide, and (?). I don't need a cookbook. Even in an emergency I can cook the same things I cook in my kitchen at home if I have the food for...
