Not really a quote, but a brief story that I think self sufficient folks will enjoy and may make them smile like it did me.
I've been trying to sell some buckskin since deer season (and after it closed) and finally got a call. The man said it was his son wanting it- I expected he meant a middle...
I know they aren't fancy and I can't cut a straight line if it depended on it, hah! But I really do enjoy these bookmarks and they're personal and made from something repurposed so I'm proud nonetheless. I gave one to my mother-in-law and I think they'd be cute to give away randomly. I am...
I recently picked up something and made that I haven't in a long time. When I was younger, I always had my nose in a book, but bookmarks were somehow extremely rare to find for me. I learned to make my own by using stick glue and pasting whatever I wanted to a piece of cardboard (one or double...
We've got some more photos to add of these- these are some examples lined up of what we've made. The one in the picture by itself is for sale. It's the first one in the group photo.
From the left, #1, #2, and #5 are all for sale. The last one is smaller and much thinner, it would be easier to...
Our deer are big fans of suprisingly- winter rye, corn, okra, beans, clover....and they once devoured our pumpkins. In general, we keep persimmon trees cleaned up for them and plant rye. Though other local hunter swear by a food plot of turnips, clover, millet, and wheat mix for combined...
Very nice looking car but yea you were right on the price sounding way too low. My husband had a 1969 Chevelle SS at one point and I'd love to one day to either find it and buy it back, or get him another one in good running shape. It's hard to find a car late 60s early 70s that clean and...
My Grandmother was a blessing to my childhood- firm but loving. "Get outside- the sun is out!"
When I think kid years, I think of collecting eggs, being sent to find hidden broody hens on a nest, competing with my cousin to get all the clothes off my Grandma's line, haying and feeding the...
If we were caught up with bills and such- there'd be important investments. We really sit down and determine necessary items, and how they'd be worth the investment. Could it pay for itself? Could it last a long time? Could it possibly earn income back? We consider hand tools, chainsaws, canning...
I wanted to share this here, though I also had a thread made about it. We tanned a deer hide for someone a few weeks ago that was a rare Piebald Whitetail, and this ended up being such a pretty photo of it.
I've had the marvelous privilege of tanning a rare piebald Whitetail deer hide for someone this past week and just couldn't help but share. It's so beautiful, and deserves a share. I didn't take the deer, but boy I'm proud to have tanned the back piece (front was shoulder mounted). Antlers...
I've sent up prayer for this family, and will continue to keep them in prayer. I cannot imagine their heartache, losing this small child. I don't even have a verse or thought to offer...I just pray for comfort in this time of loss.
Thank you for reminding everyone, though sadly in this...
@frustratedearthmother - It is, but I enjoy being able to repurpose the bone! One of my next projects is taking the bone from the skull's nasal cavity, and shaping a fishing hook with it. You can also make fleshers for cleaning hides out of the leg bones too.
Figured I would also try and give these a post as well. We've started making bone needles in the past year, which did really well for us in making a few deer hide quivers. They're shaped well for possibly using for nalbinding.
The needles are made from the cleaned leg bones of deer- similarly...
