You've made some fine projects with that sawmill. I'm not talented enough to build furniture- now the mother in law actually took our scraps and made a whole entertainment center with it! If I can dig it up sometime, we used a huge live edge slab and I wood-burned on it for our bed's head and...
@CrealCritter - Love the presentation. New sawmillers need to see this! What good info is included. The man with the corn crib actually had some HUGE really old heart Pine beams he used for the floor framing, the center beam, and I don't think he used them for the rafters though. I'll take a...
Well, nice to meet you all firstly! I have a journal over at Backyard Herds but this will be a place to post information more on our self-sufficiency plans and doings. I'll answer some questions as suggested by SS to start! I know it will be long, but I would like to give as much info to be...
@milkmansdaughter - Our house was actually roughly this size with a shorter roof for the attic! He actually has this tall where you can walk upstairs- he is going to use a big antique conveyor belt system to feed the corn in the top window one day. Because he has probably 2 of his own fields and...
Here are some photos- they're thumbnails to fit, so click to see them larger:
When the mill first arrived and we assembled it
The mill with our tractor in the background, and a sled we built to skid wood to our cabin to build
These deserve to be larger though. This corn crib we traded...
I wanted to guess by the orange color it was a Woodmizer but heck I wanted to say older Norwoods were orange and there's other brands out there. We've got an old 1954 Ford tractor that hauls for us- we actually traded part of the corn crib work to get.
I'd love to see more photos of stuff y'all...
@CrealCritter - I just happened by this thread as I have been away from SS for a spell. What kind of sawmill are you working with? We have a Norwood LM29 that built a corn crib, our first home, and much more.
@milkmansdaughter - I saw you were in Alabama? What part?
I was curious to see if anyone here has ever made their own homemade cover scents/attractants? We did a little experimenting with persimmons and acorns for the first time- was not too pleased with the first round of the persimmon scent, but the acorn came out really nice!
If you have ever made...
Getting prepared here for trapping season with excitement. My husband is the trapper and I'm the tanner haha! Can't wait to get going. Really wanting to get a fox and make a warm hat this year.
Just looking to connect with any other members, whether old or new, who may be from the great state of Alabama!
My husband and I are currently located in Central Alabama on a small farm with chickens, ducks, goats, and dogs!
We really enjoy raising a garden each year, then canning and freezing the extras! It's also great to have your chickens and ducks for eggs- we love them so much.
I have 19 pieces of dried deer sinew that measure 5" average each. If you pound gently with a rounded rock, you can separate it into small strands for many practical and craft uses. I've included in the images a bundle of already separated sinew to show you what it looks like. Asking $25 for it...
@Mini Horses - The ducklings are extremely sociable at over a month old now. They're still too small to be out with everyone else just yet. We handle them a lot and as soon as they hear you they start peeping and come up to you.
@baymule - Thank you! We are getting there slowly but surely.
We have a journal that's been kept over on Backyard Herds, but for the most part our adventures would be better kept here. We are the Burnette family from central Alabama, and we live at Wolf Branch Homestead. We currently have 4 dogs, 4 chickens, 7 ducks, and 1 goat (who is about to get a...
