No worries! I must admit that that is also my first thought whenever I see that particular specification. However, it was HIS BO, and not MINE ... thank you very much!!!
I do have another rooster, but he, and his girls, are in another coop. For various reasons the two flocks never combine - one is out one day, and the other the next. So those two guys had never been closer than the hardware cloth would let them be. They will all be able to run together now...
Quite honestly, I also think it is coincidence. I know - if that's the case why did I pose the question? Mostly just to see what sort of conversation might start. And also because I don't know anybody in real life who might be inclined to commiserate with me over the death of a chicken ;)...
Hey, Britesea, nice to "see" you again; its been awhile :frow
That is really interesting about frying the cornsilk, and looks really appetizing. I wonder what the carb. count would be. I'm not eating corn right now, because of the carbs. <sigh>, but that looks so good. Its got to be better...
I went out to check the chickens this afternoon, and give them their afternoon couple of handfuls of grain, and found the Buff Orpington rooster dead on the ground. They were confined to their coop today, so I know nothing got him; he was just dead. He was about 11 months old.
Oddly, last...
If it is just a thin layer down at the very bottom I wouldn't worry about it. As you say, meat used to be kept by covering it in fat. And after all the length of time spent in rendering you can rest assured that it is all well cooked. I would, however, keep the jars in a cool, dark place...
I sometimes wonder, reading posts like this one, just where I was, growing up, in relation to everyone else? I think that you and I are of a similar age (I was born in the early 1950's), and yet I don't ever remember the "ubiquitous" "duck and cover" drills that everyone else seems to. Perhaps...
:welcome
I haven't tried selling any, so can't answer your question. I can say that the woman who gave me the fiber initially essentially said that doing whatever was necessary to sell the raw fleece wasn't worth her time and effort, which is why she gave it to me. Now, I don't know what...
Your post prompted me to look in my several German herb books to see what I could find about pine. A couple made mention of using the needles in teas, but only one mentioned pine honey, made the way you describe. Believed to be useful in the treatment of bronchitis.
I haven't sprouted sunflower seeds myself, but I have had good luck following the advice that these people give on other things:

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
I remember a case when winging it didn't work for me. My mother could bake a very nice pie, and I learned from her how to make a good crust. She always kept a measuring cup in the flour crock to use as a scoop. My crusts were good, but as I got better at cooking I also got sloppy, which is...

Yes, incredible, isn't it? Only a dollar or two, in many cases, for a pound or so. If kept cool, dry, and dark these spices will last for years. I know the experts say they should be replaced every year (or more often!) but I tend to judge by the smell rather than what someone...
Emerald, obviously I don't know either your food or milk budget, but I have to wonder at your "if I could afford it ..." comment. I just checked the Azure Standard site, which is my first "go to" for organic bulk items (though I don't know whether they ship to Michigan). 5# of organic coconut...
Some cooking is more like chemistry - cakes, candy, things like that. One needs to keep the proportions right. Other things are best done by feel because there are so many variables. Depending on the meat one might want more or less seasoning. Depending on the vegetable, and the time of...

Not at all - I am always interested in the opinions of others.
I lived, and survived boarding school , for 3 years as a young teen in Ireland. The school kitchen was not terribly successful (in my opinion) in its attempts to feed us an appetizing dinner, but was quite good...
k15n1 - Thank you for that information. I pulled that one article up mostly because I ran across it early in my search, and it was easy to read and grasp. There are actually many articles on the ways in which soy is not healthful - but of course there are also many articles on the reverse. It...
I like to have a recipe, especially when making something for the first time - but I never follow it to the letter (unless I'm baking a cake - and even then I might tweak the flavorings, but not the basic mix). Even if I have the recipe in front of me, to remind me of how things ought to turn...
Its not just estrogen; there is good evidence that soy is bad for other reasons as well. I think I remember you mentioning your age at some point, and I believe you and I are just about the same age, and you are probably right - its a little too late to be very worried about ingesting less...
I missed this when you first posted. Glad that I found it now. You have a lovely spot there. I'm really envious of your wife's studio. My DH is also an artist (not professional, just for his own pleasure), and it would be wonderful for him to have such a lovely space. We have a friend in...
