    Zenbirder - living alongside nature

Actually we are quite bug free most of the time, it's too dry. I would say almost every area of the country I have traveled to has more bug problems than we do! Dacjohns, I was too late for the pinions this year, they had already dropped or been stashed by the jays. Next year I will try...

    A gentle reminder....

Thanks so much for being kind on this subject. I am left with a warm feeling about this group, that there is a lot of respect for the diversity of people involved in their own personal quest for self sufficiency. :hugs

    A gentle reminder....

So far this group has been quite considerate in keeping the hunting topics in this new category. May I offer a gentle reminder to please, please not post dead animal pictures in other categories where those of us who object to such sights have no warning before the image pops up on the screen...

What did you do to save $ today?

I cooked breakfast, scrambled eggs with tomato and avocado - and leftover cornbread crumbled in soy yogurt, on the wood stove in the family room instead of using the propane stove in the kitchen. At the same time I cooked a wild rice and mushroom soup for dinner ( I did have to heat the oven...

    newbie wood burner needs advise

It would help if you could answer these questions: What type of wood are you using, and is it dry or green? Is your garden soil more basic or acidic? Explain more about the flue rubbing, exactly what happens when you do what..... Can you post a picture of your set up? For my set up I only...

    Dacjohns--Changes

If I remember correctly, way back when, the electoral college was set up because of slow transportation. People would hold an election, then send a representative by horseback to the capitol to cast the vote for them. In some places the electoral person is not even legally bound to vote the...

    Food storage list must haves

A lot of commercial salt has silica-aluminate in it to keep it from caking, and consuming aluminum isn't a good thing. Salt can either be mined from old ocean deposits or evaporated from current ocean waters. I like the Real Salt, like Helena said. My problem with sea salts that are...

Wasn't sure where to post this, but...

:weee I'm so happy for you! Might I suggest that if you go to a church, pass the word that you could use jars. Many older women have a stash and no one interested to leave them to. Who knows, it wouldn't hurt to try!

    Zenbirder - living alongside nature

I read some of the negativity about member's journals in another thread. Personally, I feel I can read journals if I want and skip if I want. I think there is a possibility for me to gain some good insight from the sufficiency journey that others are going through, since each of our paths is...

    solar heat from pop cans

That was kinda cool! My chickens have a solar heated chicken house. We had an old solar water panel not being used for years and were able to mount it on the south side of the coop. It circulates water to a tank we made from an old medical drum, which sits inside the house. The house never...

I Scored Today!!! :ya :ya :ya A 22 quart, one year old pressure canner for $30 :woot I have had a pressure canner at the top of my want list, and there it was at a garage sale this morning. I spoke with the lady, she said she bought it last year because her Mom always canned stuff. She made...

    Making rugs

I am in need of new porch rugs for wiping feet. I have previously made a small rug by crocheting ripped up scrap jeans. It was a bit thick, but nice and long wearing for inside use. I also can think through how to braid a rug, although I have never tried it. Who here makes rugs? What...

    Dacjohns--Changes

I had not visited BYC in a long time, but went to see the thread. It sure enough made me want to stay away from BYC unless I have a real chicken problem to talk about. It was at least one of the nasty people posting on that thread and provoking that made me quit visiting the site in the first...

Cooking with less meat ideas? (to save money)

We are vegetarians, and used to eat quite a bit of the meat substitutes. Now the prices on some of my favorites have put them out of reach except for special occasions. So even vegetarians can be stretched and challenged these days! The TVP is quite cheap still, I would give it a try in...
