What do you WANT to learn to do?

I'd love to learn how to spin and weave. I'd also like to increase my skills at canning...particularly canning meat.

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

No actual canning today but lots and lots of prep work! Picked the plums from our tree this morning; should get a nice batch of jam from them. Hit the farmers' market at 11am and scored 3 boxes of Romas that were picked just this morning...woohoo! The last ones we got all went into 9 quarts...

    Hi from northern Colorado

You're right Neiklot...if you plan carefully you can get a lot out of a little bit of space. We're working on conditioning our soil. Where we live it's very alkaline and has a very, very high percentage of clay. We finally have a nice corner of the yard that is in pretty good shape, so we'll...

Cold room /root celler w/no basement?

Plastic buckets might work providing you drill enough holes in them for good ventilation...it's the build up of moisture that encourages rot.

    Hi from northern Colorado

Thanks for all the welcomes! So far, I'm really enjoying the site and have picked up some great ideas already. Neiklot, a hectare is roughly 2.5 acres...perhaps that might give you an idea :) I guess that makes our little place about 1/10th of a hectare? I'm not good with math, but I'm...

    Neat use for pallets

I wonder if you could plant some smaller veggies in one, like the little carrots, or radishes. Herbs would be great too! I envision one stuffed with parsley for the chickens to graze on :) I see pallets posted for free on Craig's List every day here. I've often suggested picking some up just...

    Hi from northern Colorado

Howdy, from an ex-Winterpegger! Elevation here is about 5000 ft; we're right in the foothills of the Rockies. Our climate is considered "high desert"; it's very dry, not much precip as rain or snow, humidity is generally under 20%. I think we average over 300 days of sunshine. Winters are...

    Hi from northern Colorado

Howdy folks...just joined up today and am excited to be here. We have about 1/4 acre house/yard, so there's only so much we can do, but I want to do everything I can to reduce, re-use, recycle and make myself :)

    Recipes for dehydrated food

For me the secret has mostly been to partially cook the veggies before I dehydrate them...otherwise they just never re-hydrate. Can't say I ever use them as just a veg side dish though, but I use a LOT of them in casseroles or soups. I've dehydrated chicken as well, and it's great in a soup or...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

I've never canned just meat...it's always been things like chili. I've dehydrated chicken which is great in a casserole. Can you give me a brief idea of how you can your chicken...cuts, prep, etc? Thanks! Mickey Oops, just saw the later post about how you do it. Do you remove the bones...
