    Long keeping winter squashes

I am interested to know more about the winter squashes people grow, I am doing some experimentation but there are so many out there to try. My personal goal is to find good keepers that taste good. I would like to know variety and species, seed company if known, how long they keep on...

Kind of obvious - Hang out your clothes

Kind of obvious - Hang out your clothes

I made a committment to my clothes line years ago. It is really interesting to hear how different areas of the country make a difference on something as simple as clothes drying. We are so dry in the winter I have hung clothes on the line in freezing temps and they will dry by sublimating...

A small rant regarding my husband

Hi Quail;, I do all the pruning, DH can't bring himself to "harm" the trees. It is work, you can do it, and be confident. Get a good resource and be ready with the lopers in the winter! Good luck!

    Canned Salmon Recipe?

My 1977 Ball canning book says: Dissolve one cup salt in one gallon water to make brine. Cut fish into jar-length pieces. Let stand 1 hour in brine. Drain 10 minutes. Pack into hot pint jars, skin side next to glass, leaving 1 inch head space. Adjust caps. Process 1 hour and 40 minutes at...

Financial Budgeting In Relationships - What works for you?

    1. We are very equally frugal. We were both burned in first marriages, and would not have married each other if we were not very like minded on money. 2. No issues. If he says he wants something I encourage him to get it because he is so frugal that I know he has to have his heart set on it...

CAn anyone suggest a 'natural' hair dye for brunettes?

I agree, no right or wrong. For me I started getting gray early and have never dyed my hair. I am lucky that from a distance, and a bit up close as well, my gray looks like highlights. I always figured that I "earned" the gray, and blame it on the kids ;) I also appreciate all the money I...

    Arizona anyone?

I am only a short distance from the border, southwest mountains of NM. I have done some traveling in your area (but maby not near you, that is a big state!). The desert areas are a lot different from the mountains in climate even though they can be physically close.

    Your Grocery Bill

Since you all are on a roll on the TP subject.... If you have a septic tank all that TP can really pile up down there and around here it is really expensive to have one pumped. We throw any "non-brown" TP into the trash container. When I first started doing this I was amazed at how much...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

I guess I am glad you live so far from me, 'cause I could KILL for those rasberries :P Isn't it amazing how doing good deeds can come back to bite you, and vice versa with bad deeds?

    Regular or Wide Mouth Jars?

My Mom gifted me the family canning jars this year. I have not even looked through all the boxes yet, but just the ones I brought in included these brands (and I can tell some of even the common ones like Ball are really old!) Kerr Ball Mason Atlas Presto

    Cheap firewood!

My stove is in perfect shape, and I can easily bank it all night on mild weather nights. The problem is that banking it doesn't produce a lot of heat. We have a tight house with double-pane windows and good insulation. It normally gets into the mid teens here at night in the winter, and a...

    Sometimes I envy the Amish.

Now this will stay with me for a LONG while  I am just catching up with this thread, very interesting and soul searching to see what we can live comfortably without when we don't agonize over living without it but embrace the other riches we have.

    Cheap firewood!

My internal alarm clock is mostly tied to uhummm..... my bladder. I also just know if the night is going to be really cold (starting temp, cloud cover, wind speeds and dew point) to start a fire earlier that will be a longer burning one and I will re-load it with more quantity of wood every...

    MY MOTHER

Don't you just love (LOVE :o Moms)! I never wanted a cell phone, Mom bought me one anyway because she couldn't stand it if I was in the chicken pen not near the phone when she wanted to talk to me! She pays the bill so I had a hard time saying no, and she already bought it before she told me...

    WHAT ARE YOU CANNING TODAY?

Count every one of those blessings my dear. We had a late freeze and ther is NO fruit, not even apples. I am so glad canned fruit lasts more than one year so we can have some carry over but I sure miss having the fruit we had when I was a kid in CA. :(
