luvinlife offthegrid- will winter ever arrive?

This morning while eating breakfast, I saw something on the floor by the garbage can. It was a baby mouse! I scooped it up in a cup and let it go in the brush. I caught another mouse in the trap in the bathroom, they like it in there for some reason. Still no fox. Skunk has been evicted...

Clearing woods to make pasture for animals- can it be done?

Is it possible for you to thin the trees? What kind of wood is standing? How old is the growth? Are the trees straight? Can you possibly call someone with a portable sawmill to cut it into boards to use for your barn-building projects? ;) I live in the woods. It is a hodgepodge of pine...

    LED Light bulbs

For me, each watt I use translates directly into fuel costs for the generator if I use more power than I get from the sun. Now that I have a larger solar output, we rarely have to run the generator. But incandescents are not an option, and I will never buy one again. I have one on standby for...

    Water Bath Canning Tomatoes Question

I love this site for all my canning questions. I ended up buying the book, "So Easy to Preseve". I love it. Good luck! http://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_home.html

    The Self-Sufficient Mind

Edit-the funny thing is, I wrote my post before reading eceryone's responses. We all have a little in common, even though we are so different. I've read the whole thread, and it made me smile. Allow me to free associate on the topic a little, I tend to ramble, and your post and inspired...

    Dawn419 & doc's LSTA: Confounded Computer!!!

Amazing! My friend who used to live in a southern state told me she had eggs that didn't hatch, so she put them on the counter to deal with them later. It was so hot and humid, they hatched right there on the counter! Glad it worked out for you. :thumbsup

    Southern Style Security

That's funny! You know how some places have a sticker on the window that says, "This home is protected by ______ Alarm Systems" ? My husband saw a sticker on someone's front door that said, "This house is protected by me and my shotgun 3 nights a week. You guess which 3" :D

Those with children? Having some major issues!!!

I think therapy would be ok to rule out the more serious things. The fact that he said that he doesn't want to hurt birds anymore leads me to believe that he is now uncomfortable about what he's done. He may not understand death, but he knows he's done something serious. That may be cause for...

    The Bread Thread!

Exactly! Sometimes it's nice to knead in some other stuff just before you let it rise, like sunflower seeds, fresh herbs, etc. it doesn't take much t make an already wonderful plain homemade loaf into something really splendid.

    What to do with Whey

shower and tub cleaner for hard water stains or soap scum

That's exactly what I do! The only thing I can't seems to totally eradicate is in the toilet bowl. My calcium deposits are generally white. But in the toilet bowl where the water comes out of the rim, it's slightly yellow/tan color and much thicker. I have to spray several times and pick it...

I like this homemade hair conditioner

I tried the baking soda and vinegar, but after 2 weeks, I could no longer run a brush through my hair. Not sure why, but that's neither here nor there. I'm really bummed that it didn't work for me. I use vinegar and/or baking soda for cleaning everything! I had some Bon Ami dish liquid...

shower and tub cleaner for hard water stains or soap scum

I have a LOT of calcium in my water. I get white gritty deposits all over my bathroom fixtures. It mixes with any soap scum and makes it hard to get off. What I have been doing so far which works well: Straight vinegar in a spray bottle, with a few drops of essential oil. Spray the surface...

    What to do with Whey

Ha! Slip out the back, Jack... I loved this song when I was a kid. I didn't know it what it really meant, but I LOVED to sing along to the chorus. :D

    Getting felt-tip marks off plastic?

I've had to re-label plastic bins frequently. Dish soap with very hot water works ok, If you do it a few times, but baby oil works like a charm. Vaseline works too.

So here are my stories for two weeks.....

It's finally raining here! It's been about 2 weeks since it last rained. My 250 gallon rain tank was down to just under a hundred gallons. I was starting to get nervous. I'll try to talk a lot and blow some hot air to move the rain clouds your way. :D Edit- apparently "under" with no u...
