Can you collect rainwater from roofs that have solar pannels on them?

There isn't much on solar (I assume you mean PV) panels or the racking that would contaminate rain water anymore than a shingle roof or painted or galvanized metal roof would. Go for it.

Mason jar treasure find. A CAVE FULL!!

Oh my goodness! :drool. When we cleaned out the old wood and storage sheds, we found some stuff in a broken pile under the way-back of the workbench. In the pile was a bunch of rodent evidence, old rusty something-or-others, and a few of these jars. Most of them were broken, but I found three...

What's your favorite source for non-electric items?

Good responses! :thumbsup I checked the links that people listed, and browsed a bit. :caf The only other web sites or catalogs I've looked into are real goods, plow and hearth, and gardener's supply company. I don't buy tons of stuff from them, but they're good for ideas. Camping supply places...

Mason jar treasure find. A CAVE FULL!!

I know this might sound strange, but could you take a picture of one of them so I can see what they look like? Where you going to get replacement seals for them? I am so jealous!

    Stop bed wetting

I have a 6-year old who is a VERY heavy sleeper. He has a pull-up that he wears every night. My son gets home at 5:00, has dinner by 6:00, but goes to bed at 7:00. I can't not let him have a least a little fluids to drink at mealtime. You need a little fuid to priocess calories. He has...

What I learned from the last four days without power

Ah, Ice storms are terrible. We went through one in 1998. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_ice_storm_of_1998 It was like you say, with the sound of pop-pop-pop of the trees cracking. Mom said it sounded like popcorn popping. For 3 days! Mom and Dad went 19 days without power...

    SufficientSelf's Chicken Thread!!!

Two weeks ago, I noticed that one of my dominique's neck looked a little thin, so I took a closer look. It looked like she was wearing a scarf of pin feathers! I checked her out and there is no damage to the skin underneath. Did she have a mini molt in January? Is she losing feathers due to...

How many have actually made the change?

Ok sure, I'll bite. :D My emergency preparedness has to do with my driveway being so long. When I had to walk out of here once- the snow was above my knees. Not easy to walk for any distance, much less the 7/10 of a mile that is my driveway. I stock up just in case I'm stranded. Or for bad...

    BarredBuff's Homesteading Shenanigans

Yesterday it was 0 degrees when I went out with the headlamp to fill the chickens water and feed the outdoor wood boiler. This morning it was 19 and it's up to 28 now. It's practically T-shirt weather!

    SufficientSelf's Chicken Thread!!!

Glad to hear that the feed switch helped! I lost two chickens a few weeks ago on the same day. I think the two incidents are unrelated, though. One just dropped dead as the girls were running to greet me as I got out of the car. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw one by the HUV fall over...

    SufficientSelf's Chicken Thread!!!

Thanks! Sorry for such a long-winded post, it was much smaller looking in the text field before submitting. :sheepish Btw for feed- it's nothing fancy just blue seal layer crumbles free choice. a few handfuls of black oil sunflower mixed with scratch grains in the morning. Oyster shell and...

    SufficientSelf's Chicken Thread!!!

I love my chickens! I just started keeping them in April. I was talked into it by a coworker who raises lots of different livestock. Hubby used to have chickens when he lived in England, so he was easy to convince. I was fortunate to have practical advice, and to have found BYC. Anytime...

Solar Install - Story From Start To Finish

luvinlife offthegrid- will winter ever arrive?

He's done it before! He told me that he was completely turned off by the whole thing. Not from butchering a few birds here and there on the farm when he lived in England, but when he worked for a butcher. His job was to clean up when the butcher was done with the chickens. He said he'll...

Are posters here HAPPIER having few men in SS Forums?

My husband is the one who found me in the woods and brought me to the house we're in now. There's some filler story in between- I wasn't abducted! (Proofreading is a good thing). He has been ss on and off since he was a kid living here with no power and no running water. He also knows a LOT...

luvinlife offthegrid- will winter ever arrive?

I'm loving raising chickens much more than I thought I would. I really want to have meat chickens some day. Hubby says he doesn't want to. I figure if he can do venison, why not chickens? I'll even do them in and butcher them. But neither of us have done birds before. I have helped field...
