    When did you stop believing?

Santa never visited my house as a kid either, for religious reasons. We've never really pushed it on our kids, but we don't tell them it's not true either. My oldest was scared to death of the idea of someone coming down the chimney though. lol He was pretty relieved when I told him that it...

    WOOT! Gas bill waaaay down!

I used to make dipped candles once upon a time. They were really time consuming. Plus you had to constantly refill the or they'd taper too much. I think I might try to use a little more candle light instead of electrical light. Although the thing that made the most difference in our...

    WOOT! Gas bill waaaay down!

Our gas heating bills nearly did us in last winter, so I switched their "level pay" plan where they average your previous years usage. I pay the same amount every month, and then they read your meter twice a year and you pay the difference. Since then I've been line drying clothes whenever...

    Preparations for Job Loss

The best thing to "stock up on" is cash. Keep in the back of your mind ways that you could make some extra money. Also take a good hard look at your budget as it is so you know exactly how much money you need on a monthly basis, and then look at areas where you could be cutting down. It...

    Homemade Christmas ornaments

All of my favorite ornaments are homemade. They have have come from various grandfathers, aunts, etc. I will post pictures of them a little later. Some are very elaborate. I was thinking of trying to replicate a few to give as gifts. My favorite is a little mouse(made out of felt)...

Caught an intruder in our house today!

I threw a bath towel over him and swept the squirrel and towel wad out the door. In retrospect I can think of a thousand reasons not to try that approach again, but I couldn't think of anything better at the time.

Caught an intruder in our house today!

I managed to snap his picture with my cell phone before I chased him out the back door with a broom and bath towel. Here's the perp: Poor little guy was scared to death. My cat and dog were determined to have him for lunch. I can't figure out how on earth he got in. Every door and window...

    StoryOfStuff.com Your Thoughts ?

I'm all for buying less stuff. But honestly I just don't have the bandwidth for this kind of video right now. I just got home from working my tail off all day (earning money to feed my kids, NOT go to the mall,) and I really don't need a guilt trip about what a mindless consumer I am. Nor...

How to re-enter the work force after a 12 year hiatus

Google "skills based resume." You want to put your best foot forward on your resume, and if you haven't worked for a while you'll want to highlight your skills. Also think about any volunteering you have done and detail some of the responsibilities that has required. You can still use your...

What did you do to save $ today?

My best tip for saving money is don't go shopping. Sounds stupid but it works for us. I try to limit my grocery shopping to two or three trips a month, and trips to Target (for shampoo etc.) once a month or once every six weeks.

    Casualities of the economy

My husband was in a construction related business that went under last December. He has done some temporary work since, but we have been without steady income for a while now. It's been tough, I've gone back to work and my older kids are watching their younger brother some. But the sun...

Need Help On New Idea For SufficientSelf - Price Finder / Organizer

I think it is an interesting concept but agree with Pat that there will be significant regional variation in prices for different products. I still think it would be interesting to see what constitutes a "good price, " as I find the whole concept somewhat subjective. When I am shopping I...

What did you do to save $ today?

This week is my week of NOT going grocery shopping. I am trying to make use of what we already have. It seems to me that I spend about the same amount at the store regardless of what is on my list, so I am trying to go every other week instead of every week. If we run out of milk, I will go...

    storing baked goods?

I probably am a fruitcake nimrod, having used one as a stand for my computer moniter for a number of years, until I gave it away in a white elephant gift exchange. But, honestly, I can't eat that store bought stuff. It just won't go down. I will try pat's recipe for giggles, omitting the...
