    milking sheep -- paging beekissed

from http://www.sufficientself.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=160679#p160679 So what about it, beekissed? Should i get milking sheep for my small acreage?

    Mini Cattle!

Sheep are a very attractive notion to me, but i don't know much about them. I think, in my mind, they need rolling hills and whatnot. Seems like a couple of beautiful sheep in my dinky little space might be insulting to their beauty. :/ Maybe i'm overthinking it. :D

What to buy? Cast iron cookware....

Well, i covet the sugaring kettle, but if that's out of the budget, the chicken fryer looks awesome. And it would have lots of other uses.

Thank you! That's what i thought. It just makes sense for them and me.

    Mini Cattle!

me too! I need more land though, so we're going to have to go with goats. I want them for meat and milk, and i've read GREAT things about the mini's. There are some that aren't bred to be dwarfs; they're just not bred to be huge, and they convert feed better.

But that's one of the reasons why i want them to call! So i can secure my dog! I'm trying to make this easier for them and me! And you really do misunderstand me if you think i don't appreciate hard working linemen. I really do. xpc, when you were a serviceman/lineman, if you had a call to...

    Private Property and Utility Workers

For the record, i normally love both of my co-op utility companies. After Ike (which hit on the 12th), we had power restored out in the boondocks on the 16th. They normally (both companies) do a great job. Maybe that's why i'm so thrown off. I'm spoiled. :) And i don't have any problem...

No, the service guys weren't feeling conversational. :/ However, when they first came out to do the work, i asked for a heads-up call. And the first person who came out did give a heads-up call. And he was very polite and helpful. However, he felt that a new pole needed to be put in and...

    Private Property and Utility Workers

I don't know if this question is for me, but i'll answer it. They don't come here to read the meter. I'm not exactly sure how they figure it out, but they don't have a meter reader. There is a little pile of utility boxes across the street. I see guys over there a lot. Today, they were...

:gig That's funny. Like you can train someone to see at a certain distance. :th omg! I think my husband might object to the idea of me exposing myself to the repair guys - but i bet it would do the trick! No one would ever come around here without calling again! :lau

    would you consider this

I haven't read all the comments yet, but if it were me (which it isn't), and it were between the .43 acres and the 6. something acres, i would likely go for the 6 acres. Just because it's 6 acres. But i've always been more interested in the land than the house. We live in a two room house...

    Private Property and Utility Workers

Thanks so much for your responses. I won't hesitate to call tomorrow and let them know that i don't appreciate strange men coming on to my property unannounced and acting like they own it - especially after i specifically asked them to call before coming. And this is a very rural area. These...

    Private Property and Utility Workers

Well, i was thinking about it, but i already called one utility company to complain on Friday, and i thought maybe i was just getting over-zealous. I guess now i will.

    Private Property and Utility Workers

Gander...that's funny. :D Part of what urks me a little more is that i called the company ahead of time and asked them to make sure someone calls me before they come. One of my roosters has taken to flogging people, and i wanted to put him up before they got here. I don't think they got the...

    Private Property and Utility Workers

I need y'all to tell me if i'm being too sensitive. If someone from XYZ Utility Company comes to your house, isn't it customary/common courtesy to knock on the door and say, "Hello Mrs. Peep. I'm Johnny from XYZ, and we're here to do utility things." ??? Twice now, different XYZ utility...

    SS Wedding?!

It was out of necessity, but I think my husband and i may have had one of the cheapest weddings ever - short of going to the JP. We rented a renovated barn in the national forest for (if i remember right) $100. We were far from a lot of family at the time, so most of our guests were from our...

What to look for in a property to be truly SS?

Definitely make sure there aren't any codes or regulations - hoa, city, county, state, or otherwise - that will restrict you from doing what you want to do on your land. Some of the most unexpected places have some of the most ridiculous rules.

    Fired up the smoker today.........

Smoked meatloaf. I've never had it, but it certainly sounds like it must be a good idea.

    someone starting out

You can start composting or vermicomposting while in an apartment too. I saw one lady who had a small flock of chickens in her living room - though i'm not sure i'd recommend that one. ;)
