How do you know if a seed product is hybrid?

I saw on another forum that almost all of the American Seed products by Plantation Products are open pollinated. I'm not sure if that's true, but I recently bought a mother load of them on clearance for about $0.03 - $0.05 a packet. And if I'm understanding correctly, if you don't have...

How do you know if a seed product is hybrid?

Well, the one that led to the question was a packet of Burpee Crimson Sweet Watermelon. But really, I'm just looking for some general guidance on how to know. We are thinking of saving some seed next year and I want to identify which varieties I can save now. Of course, I am also learning...

How do you know if a seed product is hybrid?

It doesn't necessarily say so on the package, and googling them seems to give both hybrid and heirloom results for the same variety.

    Seed Clearance Alert!!!

I picked up 63 packets of Burpee vegetable seeds today at Walgreens for $0.29 each. Yesterday I picked up at least a couple hundred American Seed vegetable packets between 3 Dollar Generals at $0.03 - $0.05 per packet. They also have a ton of flower seed at about the same price. A lot of their...

    Fall gardening in the Midwest

Just wondering... what can I plant here that would need minimal protection? Not a lot of time right now for building row covers, etc.

Expanded the flock... the wrong way but too late now...

Update: The Wyandotte fell thru as the guy sold it out from under me. :somad He said he would hold it for me since he wasn't able to catch it the day I arrived to pick up the RIRs. Then someone offered him cash the next day, he gave me a call while they were there and since I didn't pick up, he...

Cukes and Zukes have an issue

Last week I watered the bed with a 5 gallon solution of epsom salts in the water. I haven't had any yellow ends since. However, I'm concerned that I'm not getting as much size from my zucchinis this year as last. Last year I practically had to race to harvest them before they grew too large...

Expanded the flock... the wrong way but too late now...

We brought home two new pullets purchased off Craigslist. And learned after the fact that we did everything the wrong way in introducing them, except maybe one thing. We put them in coop at dusk after the others had settled down. We didn't quarantine. Discovered after the fact we should have...

Cukes and Zukes have an issue

I've done no soil amendments other than a compost tea a couple times made from grass clippings. The soil was trucked in for my raised beds and came out of some river bottoms this spring. I dumped it right in the beds and have not had any time yet to do any soil amendments. I planned on mixing in...

Cukes and Zukes have an issue

I noticed that my cucumber vines and leaves are turning yellow, starting at the bottom. I read somewhere online that it could be a magnesium deficiency and to use an epson salt solution to water them. Any other ideas? I also noticed that the tips of my zucchini's are turning yellow. I couldn't...

    Goofy chicken...

I have not caught the other hen trying to "mate" her, but the other hen is the mother hen, I would think. Wherever she goes, the other one goes. I'm going to chalk it up to behavior due to fireworks. I haven't seen it again since.

    Goofy chicken...

We only have 2 chickens right now, with plans to expand our flock soon. On July 4, I went out to close up the coop for the night, and I peeked in to find our Blue Americauna (sp?) sitting, not yet asleep, with her hind end raised and her weight seemingly resting on her chest. What's that all...

How have you been dealing with changed weather?

Probably not enough experience here to say I'm doing anything different. I do plan on adding a greenhouse later this year or next to try and extend the growing season and give myself more flexibility and options.

How have you been dealing with changed weather?

This is only the 2nd year of gardening for me so I haven't paid attention for very long, but last year I can tell you we experienced drought conditions through June, July, and the first half of August, and most of what I grew except for zuccinis and squash were fried. This year, we had a very...
