I think my lettuce bolted... now what?

I think my lettuce bolted while we were gone on vacation. We got a big harvest right before vacation and upon return, my buttercrunch has shot up to about 18 inches high and is tall and skinny. I assume this means it has bolted? So at this point, should I tear it out and replant for a fall harvest?

Bare root trees - dead or alive?

About 3 weeks ago me and the wife planted 4 bare root trees - 2 persimmon and 2 pawpaw. Since then I have been watching for signs of life, and there's nothing. No leaves. No new growth. Nothing. I heard somewhere that if you don't see anything in 6 weeks, they're dead. Anyone have any...

    Finally! Garden update.

We had a cold spring, so I transplanted late. Even after I transplanted our temperatures stayed in the high 40s and low 50s all the way to the end of May. I can see how that would have stunted the tomatos, but I would have thought I'd be rolling in broccoli and cauliflower right now. The...

    Natural Remedy supply

How do you know it's cancer? I have a little spot on my forearm that turns brown every spring and lasts into warm weather. I can scrape it off with my fingernail but it is usually back within a couple days. When the fall hits, it stays gone.

    Finally! Garden update.

Took like what seemed forever, but my big leafy Packman Hybrid broccoli plants have finally begun to develop crowns! Yesterday I walked out in my garden and found 2 crowns, both less than the size of a quarter. I'm hoping by the time I get back from vacation in a few weeks, they will be nice and...

    New here and to greenhouses!

I read something in Mother Earth News about heating your greenhouse with a compost pit, bin, or pile. Might be something you want to look into.

Hoosier-raised and forever a Hoosier-at-heart, if not by current geography. Welcome to the boards from Ohio!

    Homemade liquid fertilizer

I followed instructions I found on Mother Earth News website a while back to make homemade liquid fertilizer from grass clippings steeped in water for 3 days. I opened that bucket up yesterday after 3 days and whew!!!! That was awful. I pulled the grass clippings out by hand and wish I hadn't...

HELP!!!!! My chickens are dropping dead!

My coop and run are small enough that a couple well placed box fans could probably do some good as well. Just throwing that out there.

HELP!!!!! My chickens are dropping dead!

They're called buffalo gnats. Here's a blog post I read yesterday about them.

    Peafowl

The manure is great for the garden?? Perhaps that would justify it. Another justification for me is they'll keep down the tick population, which is a plus for me since I have kids. If I didn't have dogs that would kill them, I'd free-range a bunch of birds on my farm.

HELP!!!!! My chickens are dropping dead!

Whereabouts are you located? I just heard from my aunt yesterday that they are a big problem in western Indiana this year. We only have 2 chickens and I haven't seen any evidence of gnats around and I'm in SW Ohio. I saw somewhere that you could put fans in and around your coop to help deter...

Buying a used tractor - what to look for?

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Lariat with 4WD. How are you thinking I could leverage it better? I mow roughly 4 acres. I have 6 acres of woods that need a brush-hog, plus I would like to be able to brush-hog for a little $$ on the side. My 10 acre field is pretty-much a clay like soil. I have a...

Buying a used tractor - what to look for?

I didn't mean a brush hog/finish mower combo. I was just grouping them by similarity. :)

Buying a used tractor - what to look for?

Thanks for the comments guys. I would like to be able to do (eventually) the following things with a tractor. 1. Post Hole Digger (right away) 2. Finish Mower & Brush Hog (right away) 3. Front Loader and Excavator (eventually) 4. Plant niche crops like pumpkins, perhaps a little sweet corn...

    Keeping Lettuce

Getting ready to harvest our first lettuce leaves of the year. This is my first time growing and harvesting, and I was wondering if anyone has any methods of preserving the lettuce. I know it can't be frozen, but does anyone can it or preserve it by any other method? Can't find anything online...

Buying a used tractor - what to look for?

I'm planning on buying my first tractor later this summer, probably a Ford 8N or 9N or something like that. I'll have a budget of around $2500. I know next to nothing about tractors and am hoping some of you can tell me what to look for on a tractor of this type. From what I do know, I'm...

    Chicken question and update

We built our coop and run in a shady spot next to the house. Recently I read that chickens need a minimum number of hours of daylight for optimal egg laying. Does that mean direct sunlight or is the shady light suitable? I really don't want to move this thing. The coop is functional but it's...
