I settled with a generic water sealer similar to Thompsons that my wife and I painted on the outside, top, and bottom edges of the frame. We left the inside surface next to the soil untreated. We expect that we'll have to seal the beds every year, and when the boards start to break down to the...
Thanks for the tips Joel. One thing I am trying to figure out is if there is a "one and done" solution or at least an "apply at this time regularly" solution for the entire garden. I want to keep it simple. I work 40-50 hours a week at my real job and have another 10-15 hours a week of commuting...
The gel was probably some sort of alien reproductive fluids dropped by the rain. There was a Dean Koontz novel about that. Can't remember the title. :P
We are planting Toi Choy for the first time this year and we started our seeds indoors. Put them out in the garden about 2-3 weeks ago and suddenly they shot up and flowered. The stems got very little bulk to them compared to what I've seen in pictures.
At the suggestion of another forum, I cut...
Really? You're picking beans already? :/
I'm jealous. I just got our seeds in the ground. Been too wet and too busy at my real job to get them in any sooner, but around here (Ohio), I didn't even think you were supposed to plant them until last week.
I have updated pictures of our new raised bed gardens at our FB page. You don't need an account to view at this link.
I am interested in your feedback and critiques.
Additionally, we brought in all that soil from a local farm down in the river bottoms in Milford, Ohio. The dirt seems to be...
We have chickens now but we have no coop. To meet a May 1st deadline for 4H we ran out and purchased 3 chickens for our daughter - 1 Blue Americana, 1 Red Dorking, and 1 New Hampshire. All of them are about 9 weeks old.
I guess that makes us an official farm. After all, you can't have a farm...
What a busy spring it's been, and a cold, wet one, too.
13 of our raised beds were put in place and 20 cubic yards of topsoil was brought in from along the river bottoms to fill them up. In the process of filling them I tore up the yard pretty good with the Dingo that I rented.
Many of our...
I just thinned out all my seed starts last night.
Lettuce, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower - all were culled. I feel like such a horrible person! :(
Went in to water them tonight and found the flats to be bone dry.:(
Noticed that about half of my starts are laying on their side. Everything is still green, though.
Did I just kill them? They sucked up water much faster since my last refill :(
Denim Deb, the Emmaus Walk IS interesting. I went in with the hope that I would grow in my faith and grow closer to God. I came out of it with a new understanding of what God's love looks like, how much He loves us, and how to be a better disciple.
It was 3.5 days and it was exhausting...
Today is my first Fourth Day. I'm sure I have some Fourth Day brothers and sisters on here. I hope that the indescribable weekend I just had will keep my spirits and enthusiasm lifted for a long, long time.
Over the weekend we saw our first sprouts popping up! Red onions, yellow onions, chives, and scallions are all peeking out from their little plant cells. Now the plastic wrap has been removed and they are all under grow lights. We are trying to run them between 14-16 hours a day.
I am going to...
