What did you do to save $ today?

I'm canning cream of chicken soup. Last time I made it I figured out that it cost me 12 cents per pint but this time I bought clear jel BUT I'm using home grown chickens BUT I didn't get the mushrooms on sale. I'm guessing it's going to end up costing about 15 cents per pint but I won't know...

Does the absolute lowest price win?

Ugh, good question. Lots of things go into that decision. As others have said shopping local is very, very important but when our local proprietor couldn't compete with the price we needed on our horse food we had to go to the neighboring town to get the exact same thing. We buy very large...

    Uses for dehydrator...need ideas

When I'm canning my beloved tomatoes I run them through the kitchen aid sieve and collect all the skins and seeds. I then throw that into the dehydrator and dry it until it's dry, dry. Run it through the handy dandy food processor and you have instant tomato powder that you can use in your...

    Lard Question

Mrs Puff the Greek style yogurt isn't so much about the milk as it is about the culture used to start it. The place I got my sourdough starter from also sells the culture for various yogurts and they're pretty proud of their Greek yogurt.

    Quick chicken stock question???

Another thing about the chicken fat...I know some people who don't can it that way because of aesthetics. To each his own. You CAN save the chicken fat and use it just like lard, makes WONDROUS pie crusts and dumplings. So if you ever have some chicken fat that you're not using right that...

what's a good POLE greenbean variety for FREEZING?

If you're feeling adventurous the Italian purple pole beans are wondrous. They have a fantastic flavor, they're pretty and they're tender even after freezing. Not particularly good for canning as they mush up but frozen? Oh yeah.

    Seed-starting question

Oh yeah, you can plant peas in the snow, they love it! There's no reason to ever start peas or beans in the house.

    Seed-starting question

If you're in Florida I would definitely direct sow them. Cukes and squash and melons don't particularly like to be transplanted and you've got the growing season to allow for direct sow.

    Washing Machine to Chicken Plucker??

This is the place to go for everything you need to make a plucker! They also have a yahoo email group where people talk about their various variations on the machines, problems, solutions, and advice. Gonna get me a plucker one of these days when I can afford all the pieces and Greg's got time...

    How do I get started?

NO bashing here. We started with an online curriculum too. I was terrified of all the paperwork, regulations and legal matters so I let someone else handle that. And around here if you're not a Christian you might as well not even bother with the local homeschool organizations because they...

    Puking Baby

I actually gave Cresta some honey when she was six months old and she got sick. At the time the doctors didn't know what was wrong with her and she was deathly ill. Remember this is 35 years ago in a very tiny town with a doctor who was about 100 years old (but we loved him). It wasn't until...

    my lungs don't feel well.

That burning means pneumonia or bronchitis you gotta get some meds to help you. Some eucalyptus and steam might have helped in the beginning but you're way past that now. I hope you feel better soon. I know it hurts almost as much as the pain in your chest to have to pay out money you don't...

    Why are rescues so difficult?

There's a horse rescue here that is run by some people with sense and I like the people who rescue a whole lot of animals down in Black Forest if they're still operating but man, those dog shelters in and around Denver would much rather kill the animals than try to get them good homes. I...

    Recommendations on Pressure Canners?

The All American is the cadillac of pressure canners and priced accordingly. Things to consider when getting a pressure canner. How much can you afford? How much will you be using it? How big is your family? How much space do you have under your hood above the stove? Do you have a gas or...

    Food Processors

Oh my goodness I use mine all the time. I let the leftover bread stay out over night and then toss the whole loaf into my food processor and a few seconds later I have bread crumbs for my next meatloaf. I LOVE using the food processor to mix up my dumplings because if I use a mixer seems like...

    Cloth Diapering Questions

There are some really, really cool quilted patterns that you can find if you google. They use velcro tabs. I saw some made from flannel that had the waterproof padding like you find on crib mattress covers or changing tables as the inner layer.

    Food Processors

I'd gone through about three of the darn things when Greg bought me the top o' the line, heavy duty, 14 cup Cuisinart. That puppy is super, duper tough and I use it for everything now that I'm not afraid that it's going to break everytime I use it. I can chop up veggies, mix dough, mix meat...
