    National Make-It-Snow Day, Oct 13 2012

Hubby and I were just watching the local news. We're located near Denver, CO on the eastern plains. A nearby reservoir is dropping over a foot a day, and in another nearby location, an entire lake that services 20,000 acres is completely dry. Bone, cracked dry. We need to make it snow. Or rain...

Let's come up with 365 recipes for what we can produce

Great recipes! Thanks. I dealing with an increase in my son's seizures and trying to get him ready for school next week, but hopefully next week while he's at his 2 morning classes daily, I can devote some time to working with this and get us up to 365. And put together a crockpot cookbook for...

    Fall garden. I need help

Good question. I'd like to know, too. We're in zone 5, Colorado Plains, and I had to water heavily just to get anything to sprout. Still, so much died.... only 4 yellow pear tomatoes, and a few beans plus a ton of tondo zucchini. NO cucumbers, which is sad because that and tomatoes are the main...

    CANDY for long term storage

We're growing 2 sugar maples, or trying to, with this drought. May be 8+ years before we can tap, tho.

    U.S. Drought Monitor 2012

On the eastern plains of Colorado, we're in the extreme area. We did get rain (a little!) the last 2 days but not enough to make even a tiny dent in our water needs. I'm praying for more and more daily-afternoon rains.

    CANDY for long term storage

I *do* have bulk sugar and would be using it sparingly to make treats. Sometimes we just want to grab something. Time is limited here, with my son's epilepsy not under control. He's actually developed yet another kind of seizure where he's motorally functionally but has no conscious thought. He...

    CANDY for long term storage

Actually, I wanted to make a simple fudge or candy. I think I found something using oats. Will have to experiment.

    CANDY for long term storage

None of us care much for taffy but that's a good suggestion. Same for cocoa and making our own! I wonder if there's a simple recipe for cocoa and milk (we have our 2 girl goats) and sugar. Will have to research. We don't each much candy at all. My kid has a lot of health problems but every...

    CANDY for long term storage

Prices are already rising almost too quickly to keep track of. I'm working on my stores and am doing well with laying in staples. We bought 10 metal trash cans: 6 for critter feed and 4 for our human staples, like flour, cornmeal, pasta and rice. I have a huge unopened bag of dum dum suckers...

    Air conditioner broke need suggestions

We started out this year with a broken AC. Three weeks into our 100+ heatwave in May and we had had it. Have to keep my son's meds at "room temp" ... not 81, which was our average inside-the-house temp. Cost about $2,500 for us: new fan and new compressor thingy. My opinion: well worth...

How do you store your extra feed?

Local feed store (Murdock's) had sale this weekend for metal trash cans, 30 gallons, $26. Bought 3 .. that's all would fit in the car we had with us. Plan to go back this week and get another 5-10. Will put two in our basement pantry for salt, flour, sugar, etc. Made room in the garage for...

Let's come up with 365 recipes for what we can produce

Wow ... I go away for a few days to deal with this nearby shooting, and come back to find more recipes! Thank you so much! Keep 'em coming! About the cobbler, can we use bottled canola oil instead of butter or oleo? Truth be told, I don't make pie crusts very often. And right now, I have...

How do you store your extra feed?

I'm curious too. Assuming in the garage, in a trash can, protected from direct rain and rodents.

Let's come up with 365 recipes for what we can produce

I'll start things off: Recipe #1: Simple Greek Vegetable Salad I love this from Garbanzo's mediterranean restaurant, and love recreating it my own way. Ingredients: 1 cup peeled/seeded/chopped cucumber 1 cup halved yellow pear tomatoes 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint...

Let's come up with 365 recipes for what we can produce

Here in the eastern plains of Colorado, zone 5, we raise goats for milk, chickens for meat and eggs, an orchard, berries, and a garden. With all of this drought and food shortage talk, it got me thinking: can I come up with enough recipes to feed our little picky family for a year using only...

    Garden Pest: The Vole

The dog comes over during the night. I can't sit outside all night and wait. The cats belong to a neighbor that we're actually on good terms with. The dad is an EMT that helped the 1st two times my kid had a grand mal seizure. Can't jeopardize that relationship. I've tried to figure out a way...

Feed and food prices are supposed to skyrocket again

If you have goats, be sure to stock the corn stalks in a critter-free place. My goats LOVE the corn stalks and sunflower stems to munch on, once I've stripped them of the cobs and flower heads. I found some metal trash cans at Lowe's. Still need to check elsewhere.

    Garden Pest: The Vole

Right now I have a problem from neighbor's cats attacking my chicks, and neighbor's dog attacking my almost-ready-to-pop-out-baby(s) goat. Maybe once I get everything figured out, I might send for a few barn cats! I bought some super hot powdered hot pepper powder. I'm going to mix that with...
