What are you planting this year?

Yes, do the corn first and winter squash first. They'll sprout then wait another 2 weeks before plantiing the beans. If you do the beans too early, it'll choke the corn. Give the corn a chance to grow and it'll be a good trellis for the beans. In every 1 square foot, 1 corn plant, 2 bean...

How do you prep when you move every few years?

Best thing to prep when moving often is: take your knowledge of gardening, and seeds. When you get to a new place, scrounge any kind of pot you can pick up at yard sales. Move some grown lights; buy new bulbs to lighten your load. You can get a couple years of good hearty FRESH produce, then...

What are you planting this year?

I'm in CO, the eastern plains. Zone 5. Woke up to 6 degrees F this morning. Winters can get negative 35 (like last year) and summer can get up to 100. Is it too late to start garlic bulbs? Say, in containers with potting soil, with bulbs from the health food store?

    New forum platform

I hadn't been on BYC for a while... my flocks are cruising along, happy, healthy and warm. But just checked it out and I gotta say I really really don't like it. I hope sufficientself does NOT change over. I've come to depend on it for many aspects of my life.

What are you planting this year?

Practice companion planting to get the most for your space. Like you wrote corn, pole beans, and butternut squash so plant them together as the "3 sisters" ... the beans use the corn as a "trellis" and fixes nitrogen into the soil that teh corn needs, and the winter squash will provide a living...

    Onions, help/info

I am ok at growing scallions / green onions, but this year intend to grow bulb onions (big red onions) too, to use throughout the year. Will be doing it in about 4 inches of goat-pen-muck then 2 inches of top soil (hope that will work). Plus saving seeds for next year's scallions and bulb...

Best foods to stock up on?

X2 I recently opened some dried tomatoes and banana chips I did when I bought my first dehydrator... 15 years ago. Still tasty. I dehydrate almost everything because it takes a lot less storage space. Of course, you need to rehydrate or drink water when eating dried (to avoid constipation!) but...

Best foods to stock up on?

Ditto. Canned meat products have a LOT of sodium. Not good for your health and you'll need to increase your water intake. Tuna with no added salt should be ok. Buy almost-expired meat and make your own jerky (will preserve it). Make your own soup with meats you get on sale, and can them. We...

    Growing potatoes

3 years ago tried the tiered-tire method. Lots of beautiful foliage but I watered too often and didn't get any taters. Year before last, tried the box method: the boxes got too wet and everything sagged. This year, I'm making 4x4 frames to fit over my 4x8 raised beds. One 4x4 section gets...

    Stock up alert!

I basically shop once a month, when my money comes in. Yes, I clean off the shelves for canned fruit, no-sugar added, because my kid eats at least one can a day, sometimes two, all by himself. It's one of his autism things, and whoa is me when I run out. So would I be condemned for taking 60...

MyKidLuvsGreenEgz .. .. COLORADO IS BURNING

Good idea. I take my vitamins for a while then forget. Will get back on them and add Vit D. Leg smeg. Does fine until I get out there and do some work, then I can't move for 24 hours or so. Too much to be done. Hubby's insurance changed the first of the year so when I meet with the new doc for...

MyKidLuvsGreenEgz .. .. COLORADO IS BURNING

Boy howdy ... life can get complicated and oh so busy! The triplets born on Dec 5 are growing rapidly and already have horn-lets! Very used to the collar and will start leash-training soon if we don't sell them first. They still sleep in the garage but every morning I "herd" them to the...

    What are you fermenting today?

I started on brandied fruit the week of Thanksgiving. Had our first helping yesterday ... wowee! Just as good as I remembered it from childhood. (Fruit + sugar + time + stirring daily)

    Homeschooling... pros and cons

I've kept my kid at home since he got kicked out of kindergarten for not sitting still, or letting other kids answer questions. This, while I was working full time. Found a home daycare that understood and schooled him at night but after a couple of years, found a nanny job so I could school him...

    what kind of chickens?

I have three groups: (1) eggers and miscellaneous like leghorns (mostly for eggs) (2) black australorps (for eggs, broodiness, and for their chicks, we keep the girls for the next generation and eat the boys) (3) bantam eggers and silkies (love the tiny blue and cream-colored eggs and broodiness...

Weren't yours born on the same day? When I checked on the trio, they were all jumping and bouncing around. Love this part! We have some kinda big tree stumps buried under snow. Gonna dig them out this afternoon and put them in the kennels. Give them something to jump on besides the mama...
