The xXx Gloom & Doom Report

With our debt based monetary system (fractional banking), banks actually create most of the "money" in existence. When banks receive a deposit (say $100), the bank deposits a percentage (usually about 20%) of the deposit into a central bank. The banks then lend out the other $80. The scary thing...

    Food waste

Most everything uneaten goes to either the chickens, the pig, or composte (and very little makes it to the composte). Most paper and cardboard is shredded and composted. Aluminum is recycled. Unfortunately, we I have not been able to locate anywhere within a 75 miles radius to recycle glass or...

Food Prices, Shortages & Inflation - The Trash Index

I don't read any that are directly related to shortages, but I do check a couple of commodity blogs a few times a week. I did a search for commodity related blogs, and I came up with this site that has a list. I started here , and found some that I thought were well researched and then...

Food Prices, Shortages & Inflation - The Trash Index

:D It sure does seem like that at times. I read a few economics and political science related blogs, and try to keep up with commodities. I like to try and watch for trends and patterns, then make a few predictions and see how they turn out. And yes, I DO have too much time on my hands.

The xXx Gloom & Doom Report

That is about the best explanation that I have seen. Generally, in the US, the news and programming comes out of the big cities in the states on east and west coasts. While this may reflect the view and lives of those areas, it's nowhere close to reflecting those of us in most of the "flyover"...

The xXx Gloom & Doom Report

I have friends in Spain and Germany. The ones in Spain are watching Greece and realizing the same thing may be heading in their direction, and they are doing what they can to prepare. Italy and Portugal aren't too far behind Greece either. The family in Germany say that they and their friends...

I need someone to explain elctricity to me.

It's probably doable, however there are a lot of variables to consider. 1. The power consumption of the heater fan. 2. The duty cycle of the heater fan (The percentage of time that the fan is actually running). 3. The type, amp hour rating, and number of batteries, 4. The power generated...

I need someone to explain elctricity to me.

I located an online Mother Earth News article, about powering a generator with an exercise bike, titled Make Electricity While You Exercise . To Quote the article: One hour of pedaling produces about 100 watt-hours. Thats about enough energy to power: * A clock radio for 10 hours * A...

I need someone to explain elctricity to me.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but if you're talking about even a room size heater, this isn't going to work. You may be able to generate something like 100 watts constant, or maybe even 300 - 400 peak, if you are in great physical shape. Most room size heaters are in the 1000w - 1500w range. Even...

The xXx Gloom & Doom Report

Exactly. The number is meaningless for the average family. It's just something that politicians can point to and say, "Look, I've kept inflation under x %. Vote for me again and I will continue to work for you." They don't mention that over the last three years that food prices have risen by 35...

The xXx Gloom & Doom Report

Food and energy were removed from the equations supposedly due to the fact that the prices of these items are so volatile and can skew the result. It may indeed skew the results, but it definitely "screws" those on fixed incomes.

Keep a watch on the local Kinko's type office supply stores. A lot of them will sometimes run specials on printing out files. It saves a lot of wear and tear on the printer, and a lot of money. You can usually give the files on a CD as either a pdf or a word document.

Being involved in our communities is very important. FF is right, it is easy to get caught up in our daily routines and become isolationist. Building strong communities and building community ties is what needs to be done, especially if we do go through some hard times. Like Britesea said, a...

    Food Storage and SHTF Questions

    1. Generally, yeast is said to be good for a year. That being said, I know people that are using yeast that they have kept in their fridge for a bit over three years. We have yeast put back, but we also have sour dough starter that we keep and use. It's good to hedge your bets. ;?) 2. We...
