What did you do in your garden today?

Friends came over and we got woodchips moved! Main garden is now covered, and it only took about a quarter of the woodchips. I think I'll plant the raspberries along what’s left of the piles. An apple seedling I thought was dead came up from the root and a single rhubarb plant survived its...

That could be altered by saying "pests" instead of "wasps." Use the same picture, of course.

What did you do in your garden today?

I set my first greenhouse into the side of a south-facing hill. 2nd (new area) is right against the house, although I did anchor it so it doesn't move in the wind and hit the house. 3rd is on an elevated porch and it's a cattle panel greenhouse, although it isn't surviving 80 mph winds very...

What did you do in your garden today?

Beans last week in the dry garden. Lentils are up and apparently thriving. Today quinoa, beets, spinach. All of these have had the last water they'll get from me. I found two survivors from the diakon radish. Three rutabagas and one parsnip survived no water last summer, and then a cold winter...

What did you do in your orchard today?

If I remember correctly, Tartarian is the direct ancestor of Bing and the Utah Giant was a seedling from a Bing. The self sterility would appear to be genetic.

    Cornish Cross 2025

Well, when I sold my old house I left the 40 yo but still functional washer behind, with a box of parts for the most common problems. My mower blades, filters and tires won't need to be purchased again, which I take as a win. If I sell the mower, the new owner will get them. Simple enough to...

    Cornish Cross 2025

Whenever I order a part, I order a spare. I have boxes in the garage labeled "mower," "chickens," and so on.

What did you do in your orchard today?

As of yesterday I have two new grape seedlings. Others are in the refrigerator stratifying. I am thinking I may turn my original greenhouse into a nursery. Mice are a problem but rabbits can't get in. Most of my seedlings are being scalped by rabbits. They eat all the new growth that they can...

What did you do in your garden today?

It's supposed to get down to 7 F tonight in the nearest town, so if the pattern continues it will be around -3 here. I seem to run 10 degrees cooler. I have the water running and a heater in front of the furnace so it doesn't have to work as hard to maintain the house temperature. I brought in...

What did you do in your garden today?

Got the trays back in the hydroponics. Fishies survived the winter, so this will be the first full season test. Last year I found that spinach does well in the cold ground, but not in cold water. Cilantro does better in cold water. Lettuce is about equal. So I'll plant lettuce, cilantro and...

There are actually 5 seasons. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Mud.

Not Utah, the Salt Lake "spaghetti bowl" doesn't have houses under it and most of it is at least 3 lanes.

Every time I see this chicken I have to sing the "Waddle Waddle" song. It's a reflex. "Waddle, waddle, and she waddles away."

What did you do in your garden today?

I went outside to plant fava beans, so I took the wild-patch watermelon seeds with me, got them in the ground, walked to the garage to get a shovel to dig clay to make more seed starting mix, fed the fish, walked out without the shovel, went to collect eggs, got the shovel, back to the garage to...

What did you do in your garden today?

I have about 3 dozen of those. They tend to blow off in our winds here, but they work very well as mini greenhouses if they stay in place. The bottoms also work as saucers to go under plants.

What did you do in your garden today?

So get some short season beans and plant them a week or two earlier. At the worst, you're out a few seeds.

What did you do in your garden today?

Which is why I'm doing drought tolerance adaptation on EVERYTHING I grow. If you have a long season, consider spring and fall as your primary planting times. Last year I discovered that if dry beans are planted early they grow and fruit during the spring and early summer when there is still...

    Seed grown fruit trees

All the plum seedlings died. I have 1 survivor from the second set. My baby peach trees (two years old) are absolutely thriving; far more new growth on them this year than the grafted trees. The baby apricots are doing great but not as great as the peaches. The dry garden survivors got...
