is there really a point where we can "create a better world for nothing"? there are so many times when i honestly want to scream "who cares if climate change is real? if it's a lie, then lie to me all you want until we come up with a better system than the one we have."

I agree. What's wrong with living a healthier life, even if we may or may not be lying to ourselves to do it?

(yes, I do believe that this global warming period may be part of a normal cycle for our planet but I definitely believe humans may have helped to expedite it.)

i'm right there with you, i think warming and cooling is natural but i think we are speeding it up AND complicating it.

more importantly, for me, isn't whether the planet is getting warm. it's the fact that we are all going to be dead from breathing dirty air, drinking dirty water, eating contaminated and processed food, and basically guzzling fossil fuels BEFORE we even have the chance to starve and drown.

I agree that there are definite ways that we can do things better. However, these climate summits are all about taking money from rich nations and giving it to poor nations, and not truly about climate. We darn well should move into cleaner technologies and "greener" ways of doing what we do, but we should do it in a way that we don't destroy our economy (what little there is of it these days) in the process.

Importing food from halfway around the world may be great for the countries we get the food from, but it's terrible for the environment. "Grow it smarter, grow it green, grow it here", is a motto that I like.

Well, to me it is all about choice. If I choose to do the things that are suggested, great. But do NOT mandate anything in my life. I don't do well when someone tells me what to do.

I feel that way too.

But what about companies that seriously pollute our planet and use up all the resources this generation, because they make the money now and don't care about what is passed on to the grandchildren. Unfortunately unless we create mandates for them, their greed is goin to ruin the planet for the rest of us.

Or people like my father, who believes the propaganda that Monsanto is dishing out. So he will vote for, promote and use Monsanto product, because even though he is a very intelligent man, he believes they are acting to better the world and not out of greed. He will plant GE corn and RR alfalfa and spray Roundup. I will inherit the land will have to deal with the aftermath.

It is frustrating.

I think education is the key. My DSS is taking ag classes, and even his english teacher is on the same page as we are. :ya
This is having a much greater impact than we could have hoped for. Because now DSS listens to what we say on the subject of food and raising crops, as well as poluting our planet. We can see the wheels in his thick head turning, as he thinks things through for himself. :celebrate

ETA: the ag teacher has asked, if she can do a field trip on our farm, because she likes our aproach!! It is what she is trying to teach the students. SO won't go for it, but I think it would be a great idea!

I do. If you don't know reality, anything you do to fix what you might think is a problem usually just makes it worse. Thank Australia and rabbits.

Even if it isn't real, there is ALWAYS going to be a problem with the amount of pollution we put out and energy usage, etc. etc. and on and on. The effects may not be as serious now, but they are there, and they will only get worse in time.

To me, it doesn't make sense NOT to care, or work towards something that is reducing stress on the earth. Like Denise said. Even if you aren't alive then, your offspring will be.

no i agree. it's important to know what you're up against. i only think that in my moments of great despair and frustration- the times when i just want to shake people and make them see reason.

there was a great quote in No Impact Man, which i read yesterday, about a guy who believed wholeheartedly in climate change and that it is our fault talking to a guy who thinks it's happening but we don't have anything to do with it. Skeptic says to Believer "Wouldn't you rather think it wasn't our fault?" Believer shakes his head and replies "At least if it's our fault we can do something about it."

i guess what i really wanted to say is just that, our fault or not, happening or not, we've still got to make those changes. so many people are getting caught up in the questions when the answer to all of them is the exact same thing: use less fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources, stop poisoning our air/water/soil, buy less crap we don't need that just ends up in landfills, and get our act together.
