Any tips on growing potatoes?

Really want to do potatoes this year. Maybe red potatoes. I have never grown them before. Any tips or advice? I want to do them in my bte garden. Can they take a couple hours of shade a day? Are they heavy feeders?

One year I grew potatoes in a huge pile of leaves that I mixed with horse manure. Biggest, prettiest potatoes ever! If you want to try that, build your leaf pile now so it will have time to compost a little.

I haven't had a good potato harvest since we moved. I'm hoping that I can do better this year. Maybe I need to make a leaf pile again......
