How many people use barn board for anything that they work on? I am a primitive wood craft maker so I love barn board. I try to find old barns that have fallen down - that is where I get the boards. It is becoming harder and harder to find these days. Anyone else use barn board? Where do you get it?

We have a friend who gets beams from old barns and uses them for fireplace mantles. He did one for us and it just looks so solid and rustic. We live in a rural area where many farmers are converting to metal barns so there are a fair number of old barns around.

We have seen the same here Bldrs- the only problem is they let their old barn get too bad so the wood is not always the best. I would love to see the beam fireplace mantle. I bet it is amazing! My hubby told me that we are heading out tomorrow to look at an old barn a friend told him about. Wish me luck tomorrow that I come home with a bunch of barn board. I picked up 3 new patterns that would look amazing with the old rustic boards!

Woodcrafts, there are all sorts of old barns and falling down farm houses in our area. Getting to them in the winter is not difficult, but so many of them are covered in overgrowth and weeds. When it's warmer, they are where the snakes hide out, and I'm not going plundering in all those old barns.

Barn wood seems to be all the rage right now. I've seen it featured on a lot of art websites, too.

I grew up in a rural area but I now live somewhere very urban. I don't have any access to reclaimed barn wood, unfortunately. I would like to incorporate some into future projects, though! Hopefully I'll get the chance to.

It's interesting to me how people start using what they have, like old wood, for instance. Then one of the magazines picks up on it as a way to get by on what you have. Then it becomes the rage and people everywhere are looking for it. I'll bet I could make some money off of my junk these days. I wish I could send you some old barn wood, Sparrow. It would cost too much to ship it, I'm sure.

Aww thanks so much for the offer, Nailed! I'm looking into relocating somewhere much more rural so I'm sure I'll be able to find some in the future to use.

I know there's a market for the wood itself. There must be considering how often I see it referenced. I'm sure the only thing getting in the way, as you mentioned, is the shipping cost.

I built two large bookcases from Barn Board 10 years ago. i love the look of old weathered boards, although I did finish the boards off so that the books could easily slide in and out.

There are plenty of barns that are falling down here too Nailed - it's just that the wood is been on the ground too long. It rots and is not ideal ot use when it gets this way. I do love the look of barn board crafts though. I am all about primitive and antique looking items, barn board does just this.

I do agree Nailed - it's amazing how something becomes all the Rage.
