First off, I'll apologize for asking this, but I've searched every-which-way I can think of on this site, I can't find what I'm looking for!

I'm interested in getting one of those battery-powered showers (you see them in different catalogs), the kind with a pump that can be submersed in a bucket or other water source, with a long tube & shower head. They run about $40-80.

Has anyone here ever used one, & do they work? If so, which brand?

I'm not interested in the gravity-fed ones. I'm thinking of this for during power-outages of several days, since being/feeling clean can be good for keeping up morale! :)

Check Amazon. They have several models running from around 20 bucks, and up.

This is one of those silly ridiculous items shysters come up with that many buy but only twelve people in the history of the world has actually ever used. Nobody will ever know how long a power outage will last, wasting water on a shower when you don't know where you next cup of drinking water will come from is a bit dangerous.

A bucket and a plastic cup will effect the same outcome as the overpriced battery gobbling shower device, save the batteries for the flashlight and radios. A french bath and baby wipes will get you through.

Ha, I really wanted to say that too but people think I'm too much of a meanie so this time I didn't. But since XPC said it, I will at least *second* it :)

Look, if you want an actual shower and have sufficient water (and for some people in some circumstances, water is not limiting even if the power is off), get one of them camping showers, where you fill a bag and hang it up and it has a shower nozzle. You can let them sit in the sun to warm up first, or not, as you wish.

If you want something higher-volume, get a barrel or even a sturdy garbage can, plumb a nozzle for hose connection into it (heck, you can use this whole assembly as a garden rain barrel when there is no emergency!). Then to use it for a shower, empty it temporarily, perch it securely up higher than you are, refill, and start showering. You put a watering nozzle with lots of little holes onto your hose, you can even have it FEEL like a shower. (Albeit cold, unless you have prewarmed the water).

Gee, if you have lots of water in an emergency and want a warm or hot shower, take all the hose you got, fill it with water, and lay it on your garage roof (with the nozzle closed) for an hour or so. Then snake the nozzle down and let 'er rip. Test first to make sure you do not scald yourself :p

GOod luck, have fun,

Pat

Our Coleman Shower bag worked just fine during a plumbing crisis that left us without water for several days. During a power outage you still have water pressure and natural gas.

Put me in the meanie camp. I think a battery powered shower would be a total waste of money and batteries.

Or here's another thought, if you really want to buy something :) (I honestly think the abovementioned ideas are much more practical and effective, but: )

Get a small submersible pump, like people use for ornamental ponds and fountains. They are not real expensive. Just make sure you get one with enough flow rate when at a 6' head. Then get a solar panel of appropriate wattage, and whatever you need to mate the two and make 'em work together.

There ya go -- not only can you shower, but you can use the now-solar-powered pump for anything ELSE you might need to, AND you've got the solar setup that you can plug other small appliances into TOO.

Since there is no battery you would not be able to take a shower at night but Oh Well.

Just a thought,

Pat

For intermittent use where you know that the power outage is temporary, I can see where it would be nice to have one. The idea of being able to use it in your home shower, and not outdoors, would be nice. Especially if the power outage occurs in the winter.

FWIW, personally I'd hook it up to a larger battery, like maybe a sealed type 10 - 20 AH battery (SLA), and a cheap 5 or 10 watt solar panel. That way the D size batteries, which most of the use, can be put to more efficient use. I've converted several of our battery powered emergency devices to a solar charging system.

ETA - After posting this I see that Pat and I were thinking along similar lines. :):D

Pat-they actually make that setup already- for fountains of course. They run about $100 to $150 and can be set up to charge a battery if I remember right. I priced them a few months ago for my catfish/fertilizer tank.
