It's that time of year when those with woodstoves are cutting to keep heating bills low. We are no exception.
A neighbor was cutting a tree yesterday. It fell away from him but a limb dropped, falling on him and killing him. DH saw him at the store at noon and one hour later he's gone.
Be careful! He was, but this was an unforeseeable fluke.

Oh, that's terrible! I will remind my husband again, as he is the chainsaw guy around here.

I'm pretty good with a chainsaw. They are still a little scary. I would much rather cut up stuff that's already knocked down.

Everybody please be really careful with "hangers" (trees or limbs that didn't fall all the way down to the ground). You never know when they will come down. They can bounce off stuff that we barely see and change direction coming down.

Sorry to hear that Sylvie! Everybody should be careful with the axes also. DH smacked his leg (with jeans on) a few years ago, and his leg swelled up so much it split open! It left a scar that's still visible, and still aches, today.

Thanks all.

I am the chainsaw chick here, Me & The Gals!

Last year I was cutting a hung tree, it suddenly released, moved the wrong way(to my plan) and nearly completely impaled my hand. I know I was lucky.

I don't have any blow downs, yet. I usually use a fence puller to yank the hung trees, but am leery of getting close to them at this point. I've been waiting for winds to fell a certain hung tree for 2 1/2 years now!

Oh Sylvie....So tragic!! I am so sorry for your neighbor, and his family. Cutting wood is a danger, that alot of folks take for granet.
Just a few weeks ago, I was asking a friend if he had a chipper....he said he didnt, but knew where I could get one "cheap"
The story is....... These 2 guys were chipping branches with a commercial sized chipper. One guy leaves for just a minute to make a phone call. Comes back, cant find his friend...looks around only to find..his friend had somehow fallen/got pulled IN the chipper. So sad...he left behind a wife and 3 babies. :hit
PLEASE...EVERYONE..BE CAREFULL!!!!

That is horrible! :barnie

They used to call those hanging branches widow makers.

Also easy for a saw to kick back and split a skull or other body parts. Wood splitters are also an easy place to get hurt, especially by wood halves dropping on one's foot...ouch! I still have an indentation from this happening last year.... :p
