Every year I grow bush and pole green beans like Blue Lake, Kentucky Wonder, etc.. And every year we freeze some, can some, and eat them until we are sick of 'em.

I would like to know where we get the seeds to grow type of beans that we make soup out of. You know, like Navy Beans, Pinto Beans, and other dried beans that we purchase in bags at the grocery. I never see these bean seeds at the feed mill or the garden stores.

Can I strip the pods and dry the beans inside string beans? I've never heard of string bean soup :)

I'm in the planning stages of a solar dehydrator and have been thinking of all the things I want to try to dry in the future.

Help.

You can probably plant a bag of store beans I would think. Find organic pintos and give it a whirl. I have thought of doing the same. I have soaked them before, but I wonder if they'd actually sprout. I KNOW the lentils will, because I sprouted those for the chickens, but haven't tried pinto or northerns. You're making me want to try it now :p It'd be great to fix nitrogen in the soil for the next crop so they would definately be beneficial I'd think.

Yes, you can let your string beans dry on the vine and pick them and use them like any dried beans. And yes, you can plant many of the dry beans you buy in the store. Just do a quick germination test on them by soaking them for a day, then rinsing them twice a day. They should germinate within 2-3 days.

If you have a place nearby that sells bulk beans, like Not Many Whole Foods, you can buy a small handful of each type of bean you'd like to try.

I've planted beans and peas from the store before, for my critters. My grandfather would shell peas in the winter by spreading the pods (or did he pile them up? I'll have to see if Dad remembers) on a tarp in the barn and beating them with a flail.

Yes, check Whole Paycheck and Vitamin Cottage. I am growing Anasazi beans I bought in a one lb bag in the organic food section.

www.rareseeds.com has bean seeds. I know other heirloom seed companies do as well.

As to the second part of that line? Soak 'em with water and an acid such as lemon juice, and they will treat you well!
