...and MORE beans! We canned 14 pints last evening and another 28 this evening. This is just the FIRST picking of the Blue Lake's and we haven't even touched the purple green beans she planted one month after the Blue Lake's! :th
The Broccoli and the Cauliflower are done and processed....
First batch of peas are half eaten, the other half is frozen....
The Cukes we have been eating for quite some time already.....
We won't even mention the 20 some odd Zucchini's we already shredded and put in the freezer, or the 20+ that I picked tonight. AND.....we picked our very FIRST ripe tommy-toe this evening!!! :ya :ya

Congratulations! :drool Fresh beans - nothing like 'em!

We had them cooked with bacon, chunks of onion and garlic and a bit of veg broth tonight for dinner......

Our beans didn't do anything this year. :hit

I never planted bean before this year - WOW! They are awesome. Talk about bang for your buck. I might go crazy and buy 2 packets of seed next year
DH has become obsessed with pole beans. Thinking up all the different places he could plant them next year. He's so funny.

Here is a question, for those of you who can them... how many packages of seed do you plant per rotation to get enough harvest to fill say, six or seven quarts? This is my first year canning and I seriousl under-planted them so I can max out at maybe 2 quarts at a time.

I also started in with wide row planing a little bit this year and will seriously maximize this method next year! I planted all bush beans (never again with pole after these) and I think three to four rows wide in one row works very well. Next year, I plan to do this with my carrots as well. I will not, however, plan peas again... my harvest has been poor and they are too much upkeep with the trellis and what not.

I am also switching to planting my potatoes in tires next year. Mine have already died back from this poor weather and it was NOT late blight either! I dug some up and it was not a loss, but tennis ball is about as big as they got. I will start to stock up on tires over the winter and have them ready to go for spring. I relish the idea of how easy it will be to harvest them! :D

We planted two rows, about 50ft long, of Blue Lake green beans, all planted at the same time. They are a bush variety and we are on our third picking so far, and they show no signs of slowing down yet! We are canning 14 qts of them as I type this, and have enough for another 7 quarts. This is AFTER all the pints that I mentioned canning in the earlier post! The wife also planted a couple of short rows of some kind of purple green bean. Those she planted in and around the Blueberry bushes and the Rasberry canes, so they should be REAL fun to pick when they start coming on!!
As for peas, we use a two sided trellis thing that have had for years. It folds flat when you have to store it and it works great for peas because you can plant rows on both sides of it. The rows end up being about 2ft apart and about 8ft long each.
