Several years ago my brother-in-law was injured in a car accident and he lost a lot of the range of motion in the thumb and index finger of his right hand. The doctor suggested that he take up carving because that would be good exercise. He started carving ducks and this has turned into quite a hobby for him. He's actually entered some of his carvings into shows and is starting to get good results. Are there any other carvers out there?

That is awesome! Has the carving actually helped his range of motion problems too? I don't carve but I would love to. I really don't have the patience though. Carving takes such skill and patience - its slow work to me. I wish I could though.

What a great story! That's very inspirational.

I always wanted to try my hand at carving but I don't know how to get started. Can anyone share any tips?

Carving ducks is a wonderful way to turn a misfortune into a positive. I'd love to see some of your brother-in-law's handicraft. I'm in awe of those who can take a block of wood and some paint and come away with such beautiful, decorative works of art.
