I got an email from a dear friend regarding cash back scams when using a credit card for purchases.

Some cards like Discover allow cash back when charging a purchase.
Long story short- check your credit card receipt as soon as you receive it to see if there was a cash back that you didn't request or receive.

According to the story the cashier passes the cash to the next person in line who is their friend so it is not on them if investigated. I find this hard to believe; that they are able to spot a credit card customer and arrange all this in an instant. But I may be naive. :hu

I usually disregard these email alerts, but it does make good sense to pay strict attention in the holiday shopping rush.
Just passing this along.

My husband saw something similar on the news....it was going on at walmart. I got the impression that they were over charging the customer and then giving the cash 'back' to their accomplice who was next in line.

With any debit card, you can get cash back, so perhaps they just enter it is and either it takes or it doesn't?

This was on Snopes as not true I believe. Only the person using the card can push the cash back button and the cashier does not have the option.

Thanks for posting this--I, too, have heard of this, but it's not a new way to scam. In Fact, in the early 1990's we came back from vacation to find an extra $100.00 tacked on to one of our gas receipts. (Believe it or not, the bill was actually $15.00 to fill the tank, then!) The clerk had been randomly charging extra to out of state plates, then pocketing it. We contacted local police and they nabbed him. As my DH, the atty, says, "Don't let ANYONE rush you after you've bought something at the store. Check your receipt, and put your money away then, and the people in back of you can wait." BTW, the same appies to the driver in back of you who honks their horn right when the light turns green.

Yes, it was Walmarts where the incidents supposedly occurred for the most part.
According to the text the customers had the burden of proving that they did not receive the cash. The cashiers drawer came out correct.

There are a number of stores, at least Costco and Ray's, where I ask for money back from the checkout person and they input it. Maybe some places have better systems but I know some don't at least here. But I have never had a problem except the occasional time when the clerk forgets to give me the cash.

Our local Walmart had an issue recently. Somebody was actually stealing card numbers and charging the cards to some NY company. Two or three people that we know were nailed. One had $1500 charged to their account. There was an ongoing investigation, but I'm unsure of what happened.

I have forgotten to ask for cash back and the cashier has done it for me without using the pin pad. This is at the grocery store.

There was an employee at that same grocery store that was using people's checks to steal money. If someone wants your money, they can get it in more ways than one. And they don't need to be sophisticated techno-geeks.
