I found 3 pieces of cast iron for sale on CL today. A dutch oven with lid, tea kettle and an iron. I know I will most likely never use the iron but can you use the tea kettle? I have seen them advertised as humidifiers for your wood stove. But do people use the water for say tea? How does the pan hold up? i don't wan to go buy all 3 if I can't use two of them.

Second. If I had an opportunity to buy 15 skillets for 100 bucks should I do it? I know some are Griswold. I don't really need 15 skillets but I guess I could resale the extras.

What do you think?

Oh we had a CI Tea kettle when I was a kid, it was just used for tea etc. We had those irons too, never used them but they made great door stops. You get a good arm work out pouring hot h2o. :P

The skillets are about $6.50 or so each then...IMO not a bad deal depending how big they are.

You could always sell the rest (of the ones that aren't labeled)...for over $10 each...make a bit of a profit.

Keep the good ones. :)

Thanks BBH, I was not sure if having water sitting in a tea ketle was good for the pan. If I get a chance I will go looks at the first 3 in the am.

The second set of 10 I have not heard back on yet. I think it depends on the condition.

You can clean that iron up and use it as a bacon press.

The teapot can be used as a humidifier or for tea. Just make sure that any rusty spots are cleaned out & the inside is dried well after every use.

Thankfully, you can heat them to dry without worrying about them scorching. I would taste the water, maybe boil some water & dump a few times before you used it. Depending on what it was used for previously, it might leave a funky taste in the water.

The great thing is, because they retain heat so well, your water stays hot longer. :)

Oooooooooooo let us know on those 10! I might be interested in taking one of two off your hands.

I'm really looking for a three legged round bottom cast iron pot - I know it is going to be tough to find, they're very common in South Africa, and are used to make meals regularly over fires.. the food is awesome. They call them Potjie Pots in South Africa. (pronounced Poi-key)

Ok you got it. I will keep my eyes open for a big round bottom pot as well.

:D
Fantastic, I've seen them online, but they're pricey - and I would imagine shipping would cost my husbands arm and leg :D
I have family in San Diego, which is close to you I think, so if you do find anything, they could bring it to me and save on shipping costs! :D

I had a cast iron tea kettle that I used on the woodstove to humidify...way too high maintenance for my liking. Rust rust rust is all I can say...love cast iron fry pans though!

No family in Texas.
The first pot looks about right, but no legs and no lid... the second one looks HUGE :gig

I've seen them on line for around $100 + depending on the size.
