So, some of you know, we raise a mid/late winter batch of chicks in our heated crawl space.
We have figured out a method the keeps all the dust from floating up ( and out of the pen/room) , and how to keep the smell at zero.

Anyways, I have a hen and 9 1/3 of the way grown chicks down there right now.
If experience proves correct, there are 2-3 roos in the batch.

One of them, started exercising the unique capabilities of his vocal cords two days ago

So far, is just a croak, but I am now having nightmares as to what its going to be like in the coming weeks.
Its -7 today, and we still have several weeks of around zero weather to deal with, before we can think about transitioning them out to the big coop.
Dinner company could be lots of fun

Despite vowing not to do this again, I've had chickens on the sun porch all winter. I've given up trying to dust it. Nothing like a 5 AM
AAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWKKKKKKK to scare you awake.

Yeah, we just don't have a choice, if we want to keep our flock sustainable and laying through the winter.

What we did, was buy two of the biggest tarps available, and dh created a large room in an area that already had a big light. we added a hanging light with a full spectrum bulb as well.
One corner has set up so that that grommets fit over a nails, to give us access to the room.
I use shavings for bedding, and we have no smell issues.
I have had company that did not believe me, when I said we had chickens in the house.
No dust and no smell?!?!? No way!!!

We did have issues last winter with dust until we made the new pen.

When my 2 dinners found their voice, at first both my daughter and I though it was the goats!

Oh dear :p I do love those start up crows for a good laugh though. We had one that always reminded me of a bullfrog.
