I took my Ball Blue book to the printers and had them cut the spine off and spiral bind it. It only cost a dollar or so. Now it lays flat on any page, no more putting a jar on both corners to hold it open!

I had been doing this slowly with my favorite quilting books, but just this summer got the idea to do it with some of my favorite cook books too.

I have a spiral binding machine but never thought about doing what you did, the last electrical code book cost me an extra $80 to do just that. It was put in a nice 3 ring binder though

Staples and Office Max will both spiral bind for you, sometimes while you wait, sometimes they'll ask you to come back in an hour, at least around here.

For books that I will use a lot for several years, I also have them laminate the covers. It costs a bit more, but is worth the extra expense. I will be having my new cheese recipe book done this way.

I also don't care for any daily planners that are out there, as I don't work a standard 9-5 day, and need room to write notes in the margins, etc. So every year I make my own planner on my printer and have covers laminated. If I were more organized, I'd have a nice photo on the cover. Maybe this year...got lots of baby goat pics! I bring it to Staples and have them laminate the covers and spiral bind it for me. DH pays $10-20 for his planner, I pay about $4-5 for my custom version! Next year I will add a couple of pockets for holding slips of paper, checks and cash, receipts, etc.

What a great idea! I have an older copy of the Ball Blue Book with the cover pulled away from the spine. I'll take it in to be done. Perfect!

Thanks for sharing.

I take the 'cheapie' way out with my cookbooks. I just photocopy my favorite recipes out of the books & put them in a binder. That way I have all my favorites in one place and the books stay nice & clean. It's nice to have a binder to look through where every recipe in it is one I like!
