As suspected when Daisy first came into our home, it has now been proven that she is not fixed. (for those of you who do not know, Daisy is a blind pug who was dumped on our country road during back to back snow storms in March, and I took her in)

She is in heat. I was talking ot my neighbour, who informed me that her dog was in heat, so I came home and checked Daisy. She has been acting "off" for a day or two, and hubby told me dogs are allowed to have off days too. so I dismissed it until this morning when I checked her bottom. Yep, just a smidge of blood, but it was there just the same.

So, I am aware this could last up to 4 weeks. How heavy does the bleeding get? Can I make a diaper? I would buy one, but I plan on getting her fixed as soon as she is done this cycle. I just need to get through this cycle.

Also, the stray male lab that we also took in, is not neuterd yet. He is an outdoor dog, and Daisy is an indoor dog. How will they act around each other, and more specifically, how will they asct, when I go to take Daisy out to do her business? Will I have to lock him up while she is out, or are they (male dogs) not that agressive and insistent to do the nasty?

Thanks for your insight, as I have never dealt with this before, and really don't want pups, especially becasue of Daisy's eye problems.

Well, MTN, I will put in my 2 cents but I'm sure SD or others will probably be more helpful. :)

My dog Topaz came into heat before we had her spayed & hardly bled at all. However, my BIL/SIL's dog (they lived with us for about a month when they first moved here) left "spots" all over the damn house. So I guess it depends on the dog. :/

I'm pretty sure they make...um, pads for dogs in this condition.

I would not take any chances; keep the two dogs FARRRR apart. When Topaz was in heat, there was a stray male dog who stalked us all over the neighborhood when I walked her. Even spraying him with a bottle of vinegar full in the face wouldn't keep him away. It was both annoying & scary. :(

Ok.. About the bleeding. The smaller the dog. The smaller amount of blood. One of my chihuahuas, some times I can barely tell she is in heat.

Now the 35 pound mutt. Yup you can tell on her. There will be spots on the floor and where ever she is. But the chihuahuas, I never notice it unless they sit on my lap.

I have used diapers on them. Small kid diapers. Then took a onesie and cut a hole for the tale. That is to hold the diaper in place, they try to take them off.

The male since he is unfixed. He should be watched closely when daisy goes out to go potty. An unfixed male usually whines and whines and doesnt let up when they smell a female in heat. And if he smells her on you, he may be a bad dog and think your the female dog.
