Dead plum tree

So I planted a plum tree that died. It's been a dead stick for over a month. Now, at the graft it's sprouting little leaves. Is this from the root stock or the plum? Hmmmm

I'm thinking that is coming up from the rootstock. No idea what the rootstock is, but you might get something like wild plums- small and unpredictable. We had one that gave red fruit that was very acidic, and another that gave yellow fruit that was very sweet but bland. Together, they made an amazing jam.

A friend of mine had a tree in his backyard that was grafted. It was two different types of fruit tree, the graft and the added piece, both grew… He ended up with a fruit tree bearing one type of fruit on one half and a completely different type of fruit on the other half! I wish I can remember what it was, but one I think was a type of citrus.

My guess is that it's rootstock too. Might be worth the gamble to just let it grow for awhile if you've got the space. Ya never know whatcha might get.
