Like we discussed on the gout thread, avoid sugar, refined carbs, high fructose corn syrup and eat REAL food. Also make sure you are getting enough healthy natural fats like butter, olive oil, lard, and coconut oil. Be sure to avoid vegetable oils like corn, soy and canola.

The veggie oils, sugars and refined foods all trigger inflammation which will make RA worse.

Do you take fish oil supplements?

Gluten has been proven to be a problem with RA. It varies person to person, but a gluten free diet is worth doing for several weeks, just to see if it is the answer.

Hydrangea Root. It is the safest herbal immune suppressant.

They've done some studies on it, and have found that it contains a component that inhibits the production of the specific type of white blood cells that trigger auto-immune disease. It won't cause an complete bone marrow suppression, and it won't weaken your immune responses to infection.

I used this with Crohn's, and it does help.

One word of warning... don't use it for more than three months straight, then take at least a 2-4 week break. Take just ONE capsule a day, no more. More is NOT better with this. It will cause intestinal irritation if used to excess.

There are also some natural anti-inflammatories that can help - peppermint, turmeric, and a few others.

Avoid hops, calendula, and other anti-bacterial herbs unless you are really sick. They can cause swelling and inflammation in the joints. It is temporary, but fairly painful.

Chemicals in foods will make auto-immune disease worse - this includes preservatives (sodium nitrate is the worst, but any preservatives hurt), dyes, artificial flavorings, chlorine, etc.

Also avoid immune booster herbs - echinacea, nettle, golden seal, etc. They have been shown to trigger auto-immune flares.

Hope that helps.

As an RA sufferer, I have not had any pain or falre up since I discovered I was gluten intolerant. Once I stopped the gluten, i have bben symptom free, other than a little stiffness in the wrists, for about a year. I also have a very clean diet, as stated above. My sis is still on methotrexate, plus something else, and she refuses to believe that diet can control this, regardless of how I am doing.
