This question has popped into my mind several times. Are we truly sustainable? I know its impossible to be totally self sufficient. But how can we be more SS? We all have a garden, chickens, and usually a couple other things. But how can we do this without outside interference? Do I make sense?

With the right supplies to start, then yes, I think we could. If we were put in that situation, we would not curl up and die...we would survive.

I agree.

if you don't want outside interference, you have to truly remove yourself from "todays" society.

get some mountain land, pop a cabin in the middle, eat off your land, get solar for some power, get a windmill etc. Don't drive into town too much, live easy and free. Take chances, don't buy insurances etc. (but pay those property taxes or you will get kicked off your mountain :) )

very hard for anyone to do actually--unless you got that killer instinct to do it.

I think a life without any outside "interference" would be very tough indeed.

I think it would be better to make "little outside interference" as a better goal. To go without every modern convenience would be taking it to an extreme. Many of our modern inventions lengthen our lives as well as improve the quality (modern plumbing, clean water, fresh food).

I think if we were forced to do without however, certain people are going to do better than others. But the others will probably try to come and take what we have anyways. Doesn't mean you don't try though.

I agree. In theory I'm a purest, but I haven't been able to be. It adds a whole new level to the challenge!
