Forgive me if this is already common knowledge but I was just on Facebook and got an IM from a good friend. She said she was in trouble; she was in the UK and got robbed of her cash and credit cards and needed money right away. I figured my good friend would have mentioned that she was going to the UK so I called her and sure enough, she was safely home in CT. It was a scam. They apparently hacked into her Facebook account to IM her friends asking for money.

I knew it was a scam because I am the last person anyone would come to looking for money. :)

I never go on facebook. My hubby however, goe on alot. He got an IM fupposedly from me inviting him to marketplace or something like that. considering I had not been on FB for over a month, how does that happen. did you notify Facebook of th scam? While hubby's was harmless, the one you recieved is dangerous.

Yes I notified them and I think my friend did also. Her account was compromised, after all. She was pretty creeped out by the whole thing and was wondering if any of her other friends would be targeted.

It a way it was almost funny if you know both of us. She comes from a very wealthy family and I am always broke, my family is poor, etc. I would not be the person she would turn to in a crisis like that when she has wealthy parents, siblings, etc. The scammers had no way of knowing this. Also, they used phrasing that she would never use. They started off by saying "I am in deep s_it"

She would never say it like that.

I am continually amazed at the information people put on FB, MS, and any forum, for that matter.
I will never start a FB account, never submit my photo to anything online, including this site.

My idiot neighbor has a Myspace page and between his comments and his friends comments they let the world know when they are home, exactly where they work and when, age, phone # with "texxt me", jail time, you name it. They post pics of everything, house, car, friends with names, etc. It's nuts. It's an open invitation to identity theft, home invasion or worse.
Hope that's the end of it for your friend.

She really had no personal information on there, thank goodness. She created her account to keep track of her teens, same reason I did. Then I found out my sisters and old friends all had FB accounts and I could keep in touch with far flung family on there. Otherwise, I would never know what my nieces, etc. are doing. But I agree, I don't post about whether I am home or out - I don't think my friends really care anyway.

I truly pity anyone who steals my identity. They will bring it right back to me, guaranteed.

Guess I am one of those idiots, then. :(
nah, you are not an idiot. Being a trusting person is better than being a paranoid one, in my opinion.
