okay so... i had some period problems.
i had a very short, very light period twice in my teens (over a year apart) and that was all. so now i'm 18 and i'm on yaz and spironolactone. my first real period this week, oh yay (that was definitely sarcasm in case you were wondering).

so, in short, i hate being on medicine. and i want to do whatever i can to get off it. the doctor said i have too much testosterone. poly-cystic ovary something, she called it.

so what could i possibly do?

and if anyone has any period advice i'd love to hear.
tampons are skewers.
pads are diapers and move.
cramps are killer.
i'm a nut about chemicals and that tampon sickness. i cant think of what its called, where your body absorbs chemicals from the tampon and you get sick?
i'm gonna be growing mugwort to try for my cramps. (i'm into herbal medicine.)

please and thank you!!!

I'm sorry I have nothing to add except your title had me in stitches!

(Then again, have you heard of the 'diva cup'? That and switching to a low 'bad' carb diet made everything better for me.)

You are too funny.
Toxic Shock Syndrome is very rare, unless you leave the tampon in forever. I agree about the store pads, I have found the cloth pads much more comfy. PMS tea works well. It has cramp bark in it. I think Traditional Medicinals puts it out. Other than that I have to say, yeah, periods suck.

Look up chaste tree berry. I started using it a couple weeks ago and it regulates the hormones VERY well. :)

" tampons are skewers.

Most tampons start off hard and if the fit inside isn't quite right- that's uncomfortable. You might check out Sea Pearls. They are soft, natural sponges that are cut to fit inside a woman and absorb the period. Honestly, I haven't tried them cause the local stores didn't carry them. You can find them online.

I hated disposable pads but finally made my own cloth pads, and loved them. Just cut up a thick 100 % cotton shirt (that didn't fit right) for the top and bottom layers. Cut 2 or 3 layers of a heavy towel to fit in between those, and sewed them together. My machine wasn't working, so I hand sewed it. Pretty easy.
I liked making flaps like on the winged panti-liners and just sewed a small snap there. The snap fastens underneath the panties so it does not touch my body. It keeps it in place pretty well.

Dump the sugars. *nod nod* I had a hysterectomy but it wasn't until I dumped the carbs that my hormones evened out and I could now tell you my "cycle".

Herbs: try raspberry and lady's mantle. Very gentle tea that you can take daily to help regulate.

What are yaz and spironolactone?

Also, you are 18. Hormones will even out a bit more by 25. Sad but true.

yaz is birth control. i'm on it to get my body to think i'm pregnant and then think i'm not pregnent= period. and the spiro... i'm not exactly sure how it helps...?

i'm not having sex and i do not want to be on it especially because it raises your chance of heart attack, etc. and most of the stuff already runs in my family. so i want to be off the medicines even more.

i've read about mugwort helping with cramps and i am growing it this year. read about lady's mantle but havent seen anywhere to buy seeds. my aunts friend said her daughter had terrible periods and she ordered raspberry leaf tea off the internet (just raspberry leaves) and it helped her alot.

i'm gonna make a few cloth pads and try them. if they are just cotton t-shirt and towel how does it keep from staining underwear? gonna look up more on those...

i've read about the diva cup but i never really thought much about using them because tampons are so uncomfortable.

I think they're comfier than tampons because they sit up only by the cervix, not running the whole length and sticking if you are too dry.

There's a thread around here somewhere selling the cloth pads. I prefer those to the sticky pads in stores.

Also, you can buy sponge for tampons and they don't have the toxicity issue.

Mostly, I'd say monitor your diet and make sure you get gentle exercise to help the cramping. Slowish walks, gentle yoga, etc.

thanks for the tips.

the first two days were the worst. for the most part as long as i'm not sitting down the cramps are a dull rumbling off in the distance. but if i sit down... in about 15 seconds the cramps hit me like a freight train.

i'm trying to be more active. but the weather doesnt know if it wants to be winter or spring so we go from 60*F to 26*F and from sunny to pouring rain to snow to rain. gotta pull up fence and put it up around the garden so i'll be gettin plenty of excercise with that. and i'm training my dog to go on walks better. and when the goats have kids i am keeping one wether to train as a pack/harness goat. so i try to keep busy :D
