So I'm trying a gluten/dairy free diet, and I'm on day 3 & deep into withdrawal! I've tried to cut out gluten before, but it only lasted for a couple of days before I gave up, since I felt so crappy. Well, I'm trying it again, and throwing out the dairy, too, for good measure. I'm wiped out, grouchy, headachy, you name it. I know it's a common occurrence, but can you guys share stories if you've been through the same experience? I'm just looking for some support so I don't give up again.

I've been feeling bad for a few years now, and the docs are stumped, so I'm seriously investigating the possibility of a food sensitivity. If getting rid of dairy & gluten doesn't help, I'm going to try soy & corn. I've also eliminated processed foods b/c I don't want to wade thru reading all the labels.

So to all you gf/df people, how long did it take you to start feeling better??

Sorry, I'm not help. I gave up gluten b/c I went low carb to lose weight. I felt better immediately. I cheated on day and had chicken NOODLE soup and fresh bread. The next day I felt horrible, for four days.
What are the symptoms thatare making you want to give up gluten?

Constant fatigue, generally feeling brain dead, diarrhea, gas, bloating, achy muscles. I've cut way back on gluten, and quit getting heartburn, so I know I'm at least somewhat sensitive. I think my thyroid also has something to do with it, but my tests are all "ok," so my docs won't pursue that option.

I'd throw out one thing at a time. I'm sensitive to foods as well. If you throw out more than one thing, you will not know which change caused you to feel better. In the long run the more variety you can eat the happier you will probably feel about your diet. Since it is just an experiment, I'd do without just gluten first and after a month or so when you can see what changes that makes, throw out dairy as well as see what additional changes there are.

SD is right. Trying to do too much at one time may be seriously stressing you out.

Yes, I agree with everyone else, quitting cold turkey worked for me, however my friend got headaches, bad breath :p , diarrhea and was a complete grouch for two weeks. However, now she feels fantastic and we can both tell when we cheat...oh boy do our bodies revolt!

My daughter's dietitian said to quite one thing per week, gluten first then wait a week and quit dairy. My daughter did just fine.

You need fat....ASAP!

Eat some bacon, salami, avocado, nuts or anything else fatty. A big ol' salad with taco meat and avocado dressed with extra virgin olive oil and a hefty squeeze of line is good too.

But the more fatty snack you have the quicker you will perk up.

Lack of fat will sap your energy really quickly!

I think I need to try eliminating dairy from my little one's diet. Even though she has improved tremendously by going GF, she still gets mild and random tummy aches. She is a picky eater though and we seem to rely on dairy to get calories and fat into her skinny little body.

I just can't imagine going without it. :(

Thanks guys! I think I'm going to hang tough & keep on with both. I actually was considering an elimination/detox diet, but I'm not sure I could make it! I do like the idea of getting some bacon.... That sounds super good right now!! :drool
