i just finished Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde, one of my favorite authors. it was stunningly good. i highly recommend it.

anyway, he always begins his chapters with a bit that seems completely unconnected to the story, but always ends up being important. when i came across this one, however, i knew he'd hit genius level. the book is set in a distant dystopian future and the chapter headings are all rules from the 700 volume rule book that governs every aspect of the society.

9.3.88.32.025: The cucumber and the tomato are both fruit; the avocado is a nut. To assist with the dietary requirements of vegetarians, on the first Tuesday of the month a chicken is officially a vegetable.
i love it. long live Jasper Fforde.

edited because it helps to include the title of the book...

A good quote.

Now just because the Science teacher in me HAS TO:

A fruit is anything that results from a flower and has seeds inside of it (tomatoes, apples, and pumpkins are fruits for example)

A vegetable is anything that you eat the roots or leaves of. (carrots, beets, cabbage, celery)

A grain is anything that you eat the seeds only of (corn, wheat, rice)

AHH I feel better now! :p

Alas, the lowly navy bean has been left out again - mainly because it is akin to the turd family of bowl floaters.

I left it out merely because I don't think I have EVER seen hay made from beans. Have you? ;)
