We just saw it on the news, and I'm in tears.

Some of the very few memories I have of my dad is from the time we went to the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama. We lived in Robertsdale, Al which is only about 20 minutes from Gulf Shores.

I remember dad teasing us about possible sharks - now those beautiful beaches are covered in black oil.

We've stopped buying BP gas - our own personal boycott.

My step mom and Sister still live in Alabama 20 minutes from Gulf Shores.

I have pictures of my oldest two children as toddlers walking on that very beach.

This is just so devestating.

Want to really get mad?

I've called and called about volunteering. I have a bio degree and have done quite a bit of wildlife rehab. I'm pretty qualified to help.
Even if none of my skills are applicable, they still need people to pick up stuff and pre-clean beaches before the skilled cleanup crews come in.

No one ever calls me back. :somad

We've boycotted as well. I get sick to my stomach just thinking about all the oil washing up on that long beach shore and the families who lost loved ones. The wildlife pictures are heartbreaking. Some volunteers are getting sick, I've heard.

The local gas prices are going down. Interestingly, the BP stations started it. I imagine it is something along the lines of "Oh, don't worry about all that oil floating around in the gulf. Look over there! Gas prices are down!"

Post a list of everything you are boycotting to boycott them? I'll go google :D

It's really tricky boycotting oil because they are in sooo many things!

ETA: Here's some products ...

BP Biofuels
Gas and petrol stations
Motor oil and lubricants
Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG)
Solar powered energy
ARCO Aluminum
Aromatics & Acetyls
Asphalt and bitumen
BP Crudes
Industrial lubricants
Marine fuels and lubricants

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BP

Castrol is a brand of motor oil and other lubricants which is entirely a BP brand but tends to retain its separate identity.

Abi, we've been avoiding buying gas from any of their stations, no more castrol and any other products that they are associated with.

There's not a whole lot we can do about their profit margins, but every little bit counts!

Thanks for the links. The google-fu is strong in you!

I know this is a super old thread.... but I live in Pensacola, Florida. Our sugar white beaches and emerald waters have been hit as well. Thus my being on this forum for hours at a time..... the stinky economy just got worse with job losses for fishermen, shrimpers, oystermen, restaurants, hotels, etc.......

We are just a few miles from lake pontchartrain and the oil is in it now. Dh's uncles' camp where we spent the weekend is just up the river from it and fil is worried that a hurricane would finish pushing it up the river to their camp.(BTW-their "camp" is a fully furnished 2 bed home with electric, ac, washer and dryer and full kitchen on piers in the water with a dock around it! NOT what I was expecting!) The impact has been unbelievable and dh is worried that we may end up having to move back due to jobs.
