We stopped in a woodworking shop last week in Raleigh and they had all sorts of special blocks of wood for making handmade writing pens. Some of the woods were exquisite, with a price to go along with them. How wide is this hobby? Do many people make pens?

I've seen some of those pens, but I don't know anyone who makes them. They turn them on a small lathe and finish them in various ways. It's a good hobby for those who like to work with small things. It's not my thing.

I have seen some handmade pens in the past but I'm not familiar with the hobby or the process in which the pens are made. It sounds very interesting though.

My buddy does that. He uses very expensive pieces of wood. He turns them on a lathe and finishes them with a light stain to bring out the grain in the wood. They are truly beautiful but they weigh a lot so I think they are mostly for show, not everyday use.
