:gig Abi, you are the cooliest :D

I, thankfully, am actually adopted, so I don't have to claim ANYONE as related to me. I think that's why I've collected "family" that I like. My friends are almost all closer to me than my legal family.

When I was younger and my cousins got on my nerves I would yell "My REAL family is way more awesome than you!" and run off to play by myself.
I never tried that with my mom though, probably would have knocked me into next week. And my dad, for all his flaws is just great. He wanted a boy, but when they got me he decided I would do just fine & proceeded to treat me like a boy. Well, to an extent. I did wear dresses to church and I didn't get to go skinny dipping with the boys. I've often wondered where my dad was 9 months before my bio-mom had me. I have his nose and his feet...

For holiday gatherings, well... I'd be happy going to see my In-laws, whom I get along with way better. But when we do need to be here with mine, they are all too busy stuffing their faces to argue with me. They just wait until we leave before saying stuff like "Did she say she went to work with poop in her hair? The horror..." They don't like to hear about my farm adventures. Except for one cousin who is dying for some Hasenfeffer and likes to hear about my bunnies, and my grandmother of course, I mostly just ignore them and they ignore me. And we all like it just fine like that.

Well, the folks I am genetically linked to suck. :p So I'll stick with my inlaws. They love to hear about what "crazy" thing I'm doing at the moment. Those that contributed to my existance could care less. :(

Ah, mi familia. I come from a CRAZY LOUD Italian family with some CRAZY WEIRD Dutch thrown in for good measure. Anything goes at the dinner table as far as speech, alcohol ends up in food fights. Its insanity. The thing I love about being Italian, is we collect people and bring them into the familia. my house has an open door policy, holidays are open invitations, and its not unusual to come home with someone on my couch.

My SOs side of the family are very proper, I have to sit upright with legs together at christmas time. Ugh. His mom is the cool hippie one thoguh, I like her :)

Claim the good ones and ignore the bad ones. What else can you do?

My blood relatives are okay but distant (both physically & emotionally), I only see them every few years.

My DH's family, tho, are all nuts. It's like living on the edges of a soap opera. He gets off the phone with one of them, tells me the latest drama/crisis, & I just shake my head & roll my eyes.

the people I am genetically related too are fine and nice people

I can never join threads that say family suck....mine doesn't ---I got very lucky in the gene pool of normal acting people

(well we kinda all do act the same, so maybe we are a giant bunch of nuts and don't know it ---:p )

but seriously my family is my life and we all protect each other and allow all of us to do our own thing without interference. Yea a little behind the back gossip every now and then, but never malice to the person themselves. We just don't do that ever.

Hmmm....damn I got it great lol

no testing for me, I accept all as is lol

Oh Tony's family are fine also. A few of them are very poor and won't work for a dime if they had a knife to their throat, but heck, let them do what they want....lol----but most in his family are cool people and I like them.

That is how we do it as well. Lucky for me, we claim all of my side and pretty much don't claim any of my husband's side. So there are no worries about where we are going for holidays!
