I have a few small cans of Crisco that have never been opened. Anyone know the shelf life?... I only use it for greasing pans once in a while

also, I purchased a large package of Fletcher Baking Yeast, maybe a pound, its so inexpensive that way. But what is the shelf life? Can I freeze it? for how long?

Thanks

Freeze the yeast. Throw the Crisco in the garbage regardless of the age.

Yeast will keep for some years in the freezer. If in doubt, proof it before using, when you're gonna use it I mean.

Good luck, have fun,

How do you proof it? put in warm water and sugar and see if it bubbles?....good to know I can freeze it....thanks

Nope. I wont throw out the crisco. When I need it for a pan I need it for a pan and thats that. I was raised on crisco. I aint' dead yet...and few people have a vascular system in as good shape as mine... but now I only use it on pans once in a while. You do better to throw out all the baked goods than the measley amout of crisco I use....but I don't even have them to toss, all that sugary crappy stuff people make...and even eat every day :sick I use crisco on a pan about 4 or 5 times a year and when I want it I want it. :rant

Crisco.com says two years from manufacture, one year from opening date. Which means probably five times that. I have had two unopened cans in storage for years. But then again, I am not afraid of the food police!

If the Crisco is well sealed, then it should be fine. The only issue that solid shortening will have is the chemical combination with O2 - it turns "rancid" over time, if not sealed well. I used to put a piece of plastic wrap over the top of mine and pressed it down to keep it longer, and to help to keep out the oxygen.

I also buy yeast in bulk and freeze it. Works like a charm, saves $$ and I'm never out.

Can't help with the Crisco, I never use shortening. Not that I'm so against it, I just started cooking without it years ago and never have it.
